Drum and bass is a type of music that has recently started to emerge as a pioneer in electronic dance music. It began in the mid 1990′s and since then drum and bass globally has started to rise in popularity for its quick beats and deep bass lines that originated from the rave scene and have since grown into their own genre of music, one of which is enjoyed by many either in their homes or at clubs out on the dance floor. Drum and bass globally has just recently started to feel hits culturally, as people begin to add their own cultural influences into the phenomenon.

Drum and Bass is unique in the way that it’s much speedier than many other genres of music, with its beats hitting around 160 to 190 beats per minute. It retains this speed, which it has in common with much of the electronica dance music we hear today, but mixes it with a deep bass and sub bass line that push the music to become something of its own. When the popularity of this music reached its peak in the United Kingdom, we started seeing it throughout Europe, and in the United States, where more artists began to quickly tap in on the trend and make Drum and bass globally renown.

Ever since we have seen drum and bass globally, we have seen the rise of certain niches and sub genres of the original drum and bass, such as Sambass. Sambass is the Brazilian for of traditional drum and bass and has gained much popularity itself. Venezuela and Mexico have recently seen a rise in drum and bass as well, mixing it with experimental music to make very unique sounds. A few of these artists are starting to become known multinationally. We’ve seen drum and bass also gain popularity in Asia, as its influence now reaches Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Each of these nations has dozens of popular DJ’s and producers who boost drum and bass globally by not only playing local musicians but also promoting music multi nationally in their clubs and establishments. Many of these djs have become increasingly popular and started selling drum and bass music from all over the world in their own regions making it much more accessible than it was ever thought to be.

Drum and bass globally has been viewed in a multitude of commercials, going to show that its popularity is reaching even commercial ventures now. This genre of music is cemented in our culture worldwide. It won’t be fading away as long as we continue to enjoy music like electronica and other variations of dance music that utilize quick beats, because drum and bass is so unique in the genre, and its passionate followers will accept no substitute.

If you have never experienced drum ‘n’ bass then it might not have occurred to you to wonder what Drum and Bass Radio is. To understand why one might want to know about this type of music, one needs to understand what makes it unique

This form of electronic dance music is characterized by breakbeats that run between 160 and 190 beats per minute. This very fast tempo has limited but noticeable variation that is more pronounced in older compositions. Along with this tempo is heavy bass and sub-bass lines that were originally sampled from reggae or Jamaican music. Today the genre has a lot of different flavors and can be heard not only in clubs but on Television shows, on the radio, and even over the Internet.

The history of D&B, DnB, or Jungle goes back to the early British Rave scene. Because of this the oldest instances of this type of music dates back to the early 1990′s. This music combined sampled syncopated beats or breakbeats with other samples of music from many different music film and television genres.

Rave music which was already fast (tempo ranges from 127 to over 140 beats per minute) by 1992 gave rise to “hardcore” rave which when heavy basslines were sampled over became known as “Jungle techno”.

The earliest Drum and Bass Radio might well be the pirate radio that aired in Britain and broadcast this type of DJ driven sampled techno dance music. Not that the acceptance was universal at first, because the beginning Jungle music was met with boycotts and refusals to stock “sped up Rave”. Most notable of the specialist shops that refused it was London Record stores.

1994 saw the mainstream breakthrough of early 150-170 beat per minute Jungle music. Fans of this music were often called “Junglists” and were a definite part of the youth subculture in Britain. Although the culture included Rave elements there were also increased drug, violence, and criminal overtones in it. Fortunately for mainstream crossover, the Jamaican elements balanced the harder darker urban themes and by 1995, Drum and Bass Radio moved from pirate radios to commercial ones. Over the course of the next two years, producers in London moved into making drum and bass independently of the Jungle influenced schism in the youth culture.

Currently, Drum and Bass Radio can be found in such mainstream outlets as The Drum and Bass Show, which is made by BBC Radio 1 and carried on Sirius XM in North America. In London, it can also be heard on DJ Hype through Kiss 100 in addition to BBC 1Xtra which airs it often.

Drum and Bass Radio still has pirate radio fans, like Kool FM, Don FM, Rude FM, and others. Additionally one can find D&B over such Internet stations as Bassdrive, JungleTrain, and DnbRadio. Over satellite, one can find XM satellite, 89.5 CIUT, Album 88.5, and C89.5fm in addition to a number of smaller local stations that carry DnB as part of their air rotation.

Drum and bass music is a very popular genre of music that originated in the UK in the early 1990′s, and was heard in clubs up, and down the country. Although the music is often referred to as D&B, or DnB, and even jungle in some areas it is all the same music. This fantastic style of electronic dance music emerged and took control of the dance floors.

Although London is often named as the birthplace of drum and bass music, it has been linked to several different cities all over the country. As the style of music grew in popularity it began to spread all over the world. The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and North America embraced the dance style. Towards the mid 1990′s there were many different countries that enjoyed the style of drum and bass music.

The genre is classified as a fast upbeat track with fast break beats, which is normally between 160-190 bpm. However, this can vary depending on the exact drum and bass music that is being played and usually older tracks will be different. The older style drum and bass music will have sub-bass and heavy bass lines ensuring that you can identify the different styles of the drum and bass music.

As drum and bass music began to get its own identity the term jungle was used less and the influences it had used in the past were discarded. Although in the early days there were definite traces of reggae and dancehall as soon as the popularity of the drum and bass music grew these were no longer seen.

More complex rhythms and backbeats were used to create a totally new and distinctive sound that was to be known as drum and bass music. Although many people felt that jungle and drum and bass were very similar the real music experts could identify the differences easily. Drum and bass music has a much defined percussion and the bass structure is through the whole song.

Drum and bass music also has a very distinctive two beat drum sound where as jungle is very choppy and has no structure. There are many different drum and bass tracks that contain samples from other tracks and this is often why it is believed they were so popular. Music lovers will listen to alternative versions of their songs and this will help to promote the new sound.

As well as popular songs drum and bass music sampled pieces from popular movies and produced some amazing sounds. With the growing popularity and the solid structure behind the sound it was destined to succeed. Promotions and clubbers enjoying the sound of the drum and bass music helped it to become one of the most well liked genres of electronic music.

Although the UK will always be home to drum and bass music it is now a worldwide phenomenon. There are very strong influences in a huge majority of English speaking countries and is popular throughout Europe. Although these countries have adapted the drum and bass music to suit their style and culture, the sound is very similar.

It was in the late 1980s and the early 1990s that the UK nightclub culture began to grow along with the tendency to celebrate at organized outdoor events (read as outdoor parties). Cultural influences brought about a new style of music – Rave music, which was like marrying hip-hop with breakbeats and then with other music clips from other music genres and then maybe with dialogues from movies and TV shows thrown in. Rave moved at a faster pace than hip-hop at 127-140 BPM (beats per minute) and it really took the excitement and reveling quotient up.

It was in 1992 that high-gusto breakbeat music tracks that featured heavy basslines and clips of old Jamaican music were recognized by their uniqueness and people started referring to these as “Jungle.” The term Jungle was inspired from the Bob Marley song, Concrete Jungle. People at clubs, rave parties, or wherever, lapped up this new form of music because its sheer aggressiveness excited their senses and made them hit the dance floor with a vengeance – and it was different from rave music.

By 1994, Jungle got more popular with the masses and its fans were called Junglists. Jungle music became a part of British youth subculture. It was at this time that Jungle music started mixing elements from many other musical genres like Ragamuffin sound, Dancehall, MC Chants, Breakbeat percussion, and more. Though Jungle was famous, it started picking up a reputation because of two factors – one, its violent and aggressive sounds, and two, its association with criminal activity (because of the gangs who were active on the UK hip-hop circuit). Though it is not documented that Jungle was ditched by producers because of its association with criminal gangs, Jungle music producers started moving away from its reggae-based sounds and started producing, what is now called, Drum and Bass.

Drum and Bass then began evolving – it improved technically and started gaining mass popularity, and that helped it move from pirate radio station to mainstream channels. It got so popular that it even spawned subgenres such as Jump-Up, Techstep, Hardstep and Soundscapes. Its popularity kept on increasing until 2000 when the UK Garage music genre appeared on the scene with many hit singles. UK Garage featured high tempos and heavy basslines and merged them with House Music. It was just a step in the evolution of Drums and Bass.

Even today, Drums and Bass music is frequently played in mainstream media, movies and television. It also serves as a benchmark for music genres like Grime and Dubstep. It is acknowledged as a new genre of dance music. It is fast and groovy and that is why people still love it. And, if you ever want to get started on Drums and Bass, just pick up a mix CD or hit the club with your friends and enjoy the ride.

Drum and Bass Elements that exist in modern music’s varied genre becomes very important in one class of genre in particular. Without these elements, DnB would simply not exist. What makes this a unique form of music is that it not just listened to but actively felt by those experiencing it due to the deep sub-bass patterns of music that run through the compositions. The extreme low range frequencies that this music nearly requires systems to be able to produce is what makes Drum and Bass the music form that it is.

Bass Timbres as part of Drum and Bass Elements used in this type of music is far more varied then one might expect. Some sub-genre like techstep have explored this extensively. The bass lines used in this type of synthetic music comes from a number of locations including synthesizers, electric, acoustic, or double-bass instruments, or samples of publicly offered loops of such things. While new recordings of real instruments are only used rarely, with many producers sticking to sampled tracks, one can find examples of newly recorded Bass elements in some of the DnB music.

These elements are not typically used raw. In fact, it is very common for D&B produced tracks to apply a number of sound effects to the Drum and Bass Elements that are sampled in the piece. This includes but is not limited to chorus, dynamic compression, equalization, flanger, over-drive and the more genre specific timestretched beats and “Reese Bass”. Reese Bass is made from synthesized layers of ‘clashing’ sawtooth wave sounds as created by Keven Saunderson.

Having given consideration to the Bass, one must look at the Beat. The “808″ kick drum is one of these Drum and Bass Elements that is very distinctive and important. It is a pitched down and elongated brass drum sound sampled from the TR-808 drum machine. Although a processed sound in itself, this distinctive element continues to be subjected to great experimentation.

Drum and Bass would not be what it is without the breakbeat. Producers spend many hours perfecting this element alone. Of these elements, the Amen Break is the most widely used. Others that are fairly common include the Apache Break, the Funky Drummer, Soul Pride, and Scorpio. As the genre has become more advanced producers have sampled breakbeats and even gone to the extent of switching from one to another between each bar. Newer breakbeats continue to be developed also, most notably the Tramen (a mix of the Amen and a James Brown funk) and the Alex Reece breakbeat.

Drum and Bass Elements alone are not that fantastic, yet they are important to assisting in the creation of DnB music. The fast drum backbeat has been compared to a canvas that producers can paint with sound. Creative individuals in the field of Drum and Bass can and do make music that speaks to a broad range of tastes. These elements are like the background of a painting, and typically support a work of art that is heard and felt not seen.

When comparing Jungle vs. Drum and Bass it is difficult to disassociate the two on many occasions because neither of these genres of music has ever had their terms completely defined. The argument is basically made differently each time on a case by case basis, but some common arguments have recently become more popular in the heated debate between the avid fans of either genre, and thus some principles to define each are starting to become more apparent, and starting to take form of a solution to the jungle vs. drum and bass debate once and for all.

Much associate jungle music with the older and darker sounding music that was gaining popularity in the early nineties, this niche of music is often referred to as jungle techno in its early stages, and that drum and bass was a genre of music that proceeded jungle techno. However, jungle is also associated with a form of reggae which is very uncommon called ragga. The word can lose meaning between the two different genres and make it difficult to define and often two people can use the word jungle in association to multiple genres of music.

The more popular argument over the distinctions of jungle vs. drum and bass are that drum and bass has its percussion playing to fit the bass structure, while jungle’s bass and percussion usually act separately. The simplified break beats of drum and bass are often much less complex than the ones associated with jungle music. The vocals also vary between jungle and drum and bass, where jungle is predominantly reggae vocalizations, however both can vary.

The close association that jungle has to reggae has actually added to the confusion of the debate, as many clubs and DJ’s that wouldn’t play reggae music would play jungle and simply refer to it as drum and bass unknowingly. Many songs that would be considered to be Jungle music have become quite popular through them being played at these clubs, however now people often refer to these songs as drum and bass, and carry the same misconceptions with them when identifying these two genres of music.

In the middle of the nineties jungle began to branch away from the reggae sound and become something of its own genre, utilizing heavier hitting beats, and edited breaks. In fact, during this movement, one of the most popular and famous jungle songs was first released on an album titled “drum and bass selection 1″.

With the debate still around and now set, definite terms, it will be a while before the argument of jungle vs. drum and bass has a resolution. Slowly, we are starting to see each emerge as their own style of music, and eventually both will be easily identifiable.

Drum and bass is a type of music that is relatively unknown to the general public. However, it’s been making its way into our culture over the past decades. The music is also known as D&B, DnB, or jungle. It’s a dance music that breaks down into drum and the bass as it progresses. So how did this form of music come about? When did it start to develop?

Drum and bass is relatively young compared to other genres. It emerged in the early 90s in the London club scene and started to grow from there. Drum and bass started off small in the club scene and was a dance track that stood out from the rest. The highlight is the fast drum and heavy bass, creating a feeling of adrenaline and a rush from the beat.

Like other types of electronic music, DnB combines beats and styles from different genres such as hip hop, rock, and pop. The difference between DnB and other types of dance music isn’t something that can always be noticed. When you first listen to a drum and bass track, you’ll notice that it has the components of your typical electronic track.

The difference is in the drum and bass as the style suggests. The bass is a deep bass that you can feel in your core when you’re in the club. The bass plays along with the drums back and forth and you’ll hear a contrast between them that really makes this type of music stand out. The drums and bass are not ones you would hear from an instrument but ones typical in electronic music. The drums most resemble a kick drum and a snare.

Most people have probably heard drum and bass tracks in many Volkswagon commercial. The tracks in these commercials have been without vocals. But there are many tracks that feature vocals and in some cases the use of real drums and bass for a sound with more texture and depth.

If you’re into electronic music then drum and bass is definitely worth checking out. You’ll find that there are a wide variety of songs from laid back to more fast paced songs. If you want to get into the scene and the music, you should visit the drum and bass arena.

The drum and bass arena is a site (and brand) that offers the latest news about the music. Drum and bass is more than a genre of music, it is a scene that has a large following. The site will allow you to be part of the community, help you discover new music, get tips on DJing, and buy music that is normally hard to find.

Again, drum and bass is worth checking out if you like the club scene and enjoy electronic music. It is a really unique genre that grows on you as you dig deeper into the scene. Go visit the drum and bass arena for all the latest information.

Drum and Bass refers to a type of electronic dance music. A product of the London Club scene of the mid-1990s, the genre derives its name from the part of song that features just drum and bass. It is also referred to as “drum ‘n’ bass,” “D&B” or “DnB” and “Jungle”.

Characteristics of drum and Bass music

Drum and Bass is fast and furious and is characterized by breakbeats between 160 and 190 BPM (beats per minute), with heavy bass lines. Though it has undergone a lot of changes since its inception and has spawned many sub-genres, it retains 3 important and 1 often-employed features:

1. Highlighting of the drum and bass line elements: The bass line which is a deep sub-bass musical arrangement, is so powerful that it can be physically felt when played on potent sound systems. The bass line is a prominent feature of Drum and Bass music.

2. Tempo: Drum and Bass currently sustains anything between 160 and 190 BPM as compared to other backbeat genres, which maintain 130 to 140 BPM. In 1991, Drm and Bass maintained BPM at 130, and then BPM perked up to 160 by 1993. The Drum and Bass of 1996 and beyond was played between 170 and 180 BPM. Note though that the BPM drops during a live performance because of obvious limitations such as high-energy atmosphere, exertion, interactive settings, etc.

3. Sound effects: Many drum and bass tracks (and not all) subject their bass lines to sound effects like compression, flanger, overdrive, timestretched beats, equalization, “Resse Bass,” and some more.

4. Setting: Drum and Bass is best heard in clubs because its full frequency response can be best enjoyed on sophisticated sound systems that can handle low frequencies. Drum and Bass parties are known to be very loud as compared to other types of electronic dance music. That said, there are many Drum and Bass albums that are created for personal listening either at home or in the car.

Drum and Bass Impact

It is best to become suddenly exposed to Drum and Bass. Once you start liking the sound, it works on you and draws you in to the club scene. However, it is not for everyone and if you want to try it out, accompany your friends and hit the dance floor to appreciate the genre. If you want to try it before you hit the club, pick up some mixes that will orient you to the genre. Here is a list of great drum and bass albums that can either get you started or get you grooving in the club: Earthling (David Bowie), Jungle — Sound of the Underground (Various), So Far (Alex Recce), and Timeless (Goldie).

You can chat with the folks at your local music store about the genre or with your friends who are already clued in, and pick up a couple of recommendations.

Go ahead and get some fast fun!

I couldnt find this video ANYWHERE so i decided to put it up =] Lyrics: And it came to me then that every plan Is a tiny prayer to father time As I stared at my shoes in the ICU That reeked of piss and 409 And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself That Ive already taken too much today As each descending peak on the LCD Took you a little farther away from me Away from me Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines In a place where we only say goodbye It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend On a faulty camera in our minds And I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose Than to have never lain beside at all And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground As the TV entertained itself Cause theres no comfort in the waiting room Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news And then the nurse comes round and everyone lift their heads But Im thinking of what Sarah said That love is watching someone die So whos gonna watch you die? (3x)
