?You have properly asked this question of yourself many times and you’ve probably also heard many other people say the same thing; why can’t I seem to lose weight?

The simple fact that you’re reading this information shows that you are still looking for a way to find the optimum body weight.

After trying many different diets and weight loss programs you might begin to think that you’re a failure where the reality of the situation is that those very same diet and weight loss programs that you have tried have been the failures and not yourself.

They have failed to give you the desired results, not because of a lack of effort on your behalf, but more likely because they weren’t targeting the cause of the problem.

In addition to that many diets and weight loss programs leave people feeling hungry for considerable times throughout the day and this is not how we are supposed to live.

Just as animals in the wild feel the need to eat when they are hungry humans react in the same way and it is only natural that you should seek out food if you’re feeling hungry.

If your diet is supplying you have sufficient nutrients to meet your energy needs then you won’t feel hungry all the time and any weight-loss program that keeps you in such a state of hunger is in fact destined to fail eventually no matter how much willpower you might have.

It is simply not the natural state of human life.

That is one of the most common reasons why people can’t seem to lose weight. It’s just too hard to maintain and it is detrimental to your health and your body will fight against that starvation message that it is getting.

Anybody can lose weight whether they have good willpower or not provided the body is getting sufficient nutritional requirements to eliminate hunger and to satisfy healthy functioning of the body.

?Using Leftovers to Create Great Salads

How many times have you heard someone in your family say this? “I don’t want that for dinner. We just had the same thing last night.” More often than not when it comes to making use of leftovers this is a common occurrence in most households. What happens next? The food stays in the refrigerator for 3 or 4 days then it hits the trash. What a waste of good food and money.

There’s a way to use those leftovers that’s quick, saves money and will keep the whining and complaining to a minimum. Create a salad. That’s right a salad. How? It’s pretty simple when you think about it. Here are a few salad ideas made with leftovers you can try the next time you’ve got food in the fridge that no one wants to finish off.

Take a look at the meat you have from previous meals. That roast beef can be sliced and added to a salad for a hearty lunch. What about pork? Add it to a salad with some sesame seeds and coleslaw for an Asian side dish.

Left over hamburger can be added to a bit of lettuce to make a taco salad. Add tomatoes, cheese, black olives and onion with a little dab of sour cream. Toss in some tortilla chips or use the ingredients to fill a taco salad bowl and you have the perfect taco salad to delight the whole family.

What about chicken or turkey leftovers? Don’t throw that carcass in the trash just yet. Remove the meat from the bones. Add some mayonnaise, celery, hard boiled eggs and pickles and you have the perfect lunchtime salad or after school snack.

Leftover vegetables always seem to be pushed to the back of the fridge. Nobody wants to eat broccoli, cauliflower, carrots or peas again. Place these items in a salad and watch your family dive right in. Add their favorite dressing and you’ll have a hit on your hands.

Leftover fruit can also be made into a yummy fruit salad. Add a few marshmallows, some nuts and a dab of whipped topping and you have the makings of a perfect dessert.

Leftovers can be more of a love than hate relationship with the entire family. By using leftovers to make delicious salads you save time, money and can get one over on even the pickiest leftover eater. Give it a shot and see what great combinations you can come up with to make those leftovers end up in the belly instead of the garbage can.

?There are many different factors that determine which foods we choose to eat and these decisions start right from childhood.

Initially the foods we eat as a child are determined by the family environment and also by the other children we mix with at school.

Children will pick up bad eating habits from their parents and they will naturally begin to choose the same types of foods as their parents simply because that is what they are used to eating. If that food has low nutritional value then the never ending need to feed the hunger will start and gradually over time the percentage of body fat will increase.

Consider all the foods and drinks that you consume now and whether you naturally enjoyed eating or drinking them the first time you experienced them.

How many young people don’t like the taste of alcoholic drinks when they first try them only to consume vast quantities later in life? They have become accustomed to the taste and over time anyone can change their eating and drinking habits according to their environment and choices.

Just look at all the types of foods that are consumed throughout the world by different races of people. If you were living in another country it is highly likely that your eating habits would be completely different to what they are now.

Fortunately you can reverse bad eating habits by eating foods that are better for your health and in doing so you will become more accustomed to eating those foods and prefer them to the foods that have caused the weight problems in the first place.

The hunger won’t be there and the need to consume excessive amounts of food will be gone because you will be getting sufficient nutrition while eating a reasonable amount of food.

You feel more satisfied more of the time and that is something that most over weight people are constantly trying to achieve but never managing even by eating huge portions of food.

?Fruit Salads: There’s more to Salad than Lettuce

When we think of a salad the first thing that comes to mind is usually lettuce. Although lettuce makes a great salad it’s not always a necessity. Salads can be made up of just about anything and fruit is a great way to change things up a bit.

Fruit salads consist of, you guessed it, fruit. Of course they can include lettuce if you like, but the main component is fruit. Think of all the different types of fruit we have to choose from. Now imagine all the different ways of using those fruits in luscious salads.

Traditional fruit salads are quick and easy to prepare. For instance if you have a couple cans of fruit cocktail in the cabinet just drain them, dump them in a salad bowl and add a few little extras. Extras can consist of whipped topping, marshmallows, nuts or even a sprinkle of coconut.

You can go even farther and healthier by adding fresh fruits to your fruit salads. Berries aren’t the only fruits that work well. Peaches, pears, oranges or, well just about any fruit can make a fruit salad that’s fit for any occasion.

Traditional fruit salads can be used as a side dish or even as a dessert on any menu. Basic fresh fruit salads can be the perfect addition to any breakfast or can be used to please that hungry stomach at snack time.

Another type of fruit salad is a citrus salad. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes all make great fruit salad ingredients. Add some additional toppings or elements and who knows you may even have the kids begging for more. These types of salads can have a little bite so add some whipped topping or a brown sugar based dressing to keep those lips from puckering up too much.

Exotic fruit salads are making a place on the table these days. Even less known fruits such as pomegranate, papaya, star fruit and kiwi are showing up more and more in local supermarkets. These tasty treats can make a fruit salad stand out both in presentation and taste.

Fruit salads are easy to make. With the many varieties of fruit available like grapes, cherries, apricots and of course all those berries you can make this type of salad a constant at the table. A fruit salad can be made simple with canned fruits, extravagant with fresh fruits or even fun with dried fruits. No matter which way you decide to go fruit salads are sure to be hit with everyone.

?You would have heard this many times that most diets don’t work and the fact is that this is true.

Many people will start on a diet but the percentage that will succeed and achieve the weight loss that they desire will only be small compared to those who fail.

And when they fail many people will try again or change to another diet in the hope that the next diet will work.

One of the problems that face people who are on a diet is the fact that they are constantly thinking about food. It is on their mind all the time because they are on a diet.

They talk about it to others, they tell everyone they are on a diet and food becomes the main focus of their thoughts throughout the day.

Does this sound like you?

When you start a diet the first thing you have to start dealing with in most cases is hunger and that is something that is too hard for most people to endure and for this reason most diets fail.

No one wants to starve and it is only human nature to do everything we can to ensure we get sufficient food so that we won’t starve.

If you are trying to maintain a diet that constantly leaves you feeling hungry all the time then you are most likely destined to failure. It’s just too difficult and life wasn’t meant to be that hard.

The outcome for most people after having to endure this period of hardship is to get back onto the ‘eating too much’ bandwagon and pile the weight back on that has been lost on the diet, albeit at a far faster rate.

So that weight that you might have struggled to lose over a period of months will go back on in weeks leaving you feeling more disappointed than you would have been had you never dieted in the first place.

?Iceberg Lettuce isn’t Your Only Choice

What goes in a salad? A little of this and a little of that, but 90 percent of the time it starts with crisp, green lettuce. The question is what type of greens do you like on your salad? Let’s look at some of the different types of lettuce one can use to make the perfect salad.

Building the perfect salad takes time. You work from the bottom up and all the fixings need to be just right. Lettuce is not only the building block of your salad but it makes up about 50 to 60 percent of your dish. Therefore finding the right type of lettuce to satisfy your taste buds is very important.

Iceberg lettuce usually tops the list because it is the most common and the easiest to find. Most restaurant salads begin with iceberg lettuce. Although this type of lettuce has very little taste it is still considered one of the favorite picks. With all the other ingredients you add you won’t even notice there’s not much taste.

Next in line is Bibb lettuce. This type of lettuce has a slightly sweet taste. It also has a rich green color. This type of lettuce works great as bedding for chicken or tuna salad as well as fruit salads.

Romaine lettuce is used most often in Cesar salads. It is a little more expensive than iceberg lettuce. Its mild taste makes it a great lettuce for salads. Romaine lettuce is a little darker in color than iceberg lettuce. The leaves are long and they have a fibrous spine that runs the entire length of each leaf.

A bitter tasting lettuce such as Frisee is most often found in mixed greens. This lettuce is often mixed with Mesclun which also has a bitter taste. These lettuce leaves look like they have been chewed by a rabbit before being packaged. They are a medium green in color and the leaves are long and ragged looking.

Other types of greens include spinach and radicchio. Spinach has a wonderful flavor and a brilliant dark green color. One of the benefits of spinach is that color. Antioxidants are found in these darker colored leaves. Beta carotene is in abundance and can help in warding off free radicals in the body as well.

Radicchio is a lettuce that looks more like a cabbage. Although the leaves are long like lettuce the color and texture are more like that of a cabbage. The red to purple color and the white spine that runs through leaves give this type of lettuce the appearance of a cabbage. Radicchio is rather bitter and works better when mixed with other types of lettuce than alone.

Last but not least is endive. Endive is a Belgian variety of lettuce. Dark green in color the leaves are short and have a tendency to curl. Due to its mild taste, endive is chosen often for salads.

What type of greens do you prefer? These are just a few that you can mix and match to create the perfect salad base. Try something different the next time you prepare a salad, you might just find one you love.

?Why You Need Water

One thing that is often recited over and over – in nutritional circles, anyway – is to not drink your calories! We all need to drink, however, and there is actually a drink that contains absolutely zero calories… as well as zero carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and fat. What’s so important about it, then? Whereas we can potentially survive weeks without consuming food (probably wouldn’t want to, though!), humans can only make it about three days maximum without water. And water, though seemingly not fancy, is a great drink for us to have.
Water controls many functions in the human body, including its role in regulating our temperature. It is important to ingest a regular supply water – whether drinking it, or contained in foods – due to the water that is lost from the body in urination, sweating, and breathing.

There’s actually stuff in there – and it also helps you get the stuff that isn’t!

Water also contains nutrients; interestingly, it acquires many of the nutrients it contains, such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, zinc, phosphate, fluoride, potassium, and chloride, as it moves through the earth and soil!
The ingestion of water also helps us to absorb and use many other nutrients that we ingest. The parts that make up our bodies, including organs and blood, consist mostly of water. The nutrients we intake move throughout our bodies in water. We also dispel toxic products from our body through water, by urinating and perspiring.

It is often suggested anecdotally that it is best not to drink a lot of water with any given meal. This way, it is said that the stomach acids are better able to digest and process the foods you eat – ironic, really, given water’s usual role in helping you to absorb nutrients.

Water can be found in many liquids, even though they are not strictly called “water” – beverages like coffee, milk, and of course tea are predominantly made up of water. Water with other things added will also consist predominantly of water, and be good for you. The jury is still out on the artificial sweeteners in certain products add to improve the flavor of water, but small amounts of fruit juice can be added for flavor and nutrition; just a little can go along way. Drinking your water plain, however, can be an exhilarating experience, the enjoyment of one of the earth’s simple gifts.
Many foods also contain water. Foods with a very high content of fats or oils, such as peanuts, almonds, olive oil, walnuts, and pecans, contain very little or no water (remember from your science courses, oil and water don’t mix!). Honey also contains very little water. Foods such as cucumber, watermelon (obviously, perhaps), and celery, however, are composed of more than 90% water!
So remember, don’t overlook water, no matter how plain it is – and there are no calories to drink anyway, so don’t worry!

With summer days come hot, humid weather and everyone trying to find a way to stay cool. Summer also means light meals that are cool and refreshing. One of the better ways to accomplish this is to have a salad. Not just any salad but a summer salad.

Summer salads made with fruits and vegetables are cool and refreshing. They aren’t heavy and can be quite nutritional. These salads are also easy to throw together, which is great on those days when running here and there can take its toll.

What works best in a summer salad? Lettuce of course tops the list. It’s cool and refreshing and even the crisp sound gives us a little relief. There are many other foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables that also work well in a summer salad.

Fruits and vegetables are plentiful in the summer months. Farmer’s markets, fruit and vegetable stands and even the grocery stores are filled with the wonderful smells and colors of these fresh little wonders.

Let’s start with vegetable salads. What vegetables make the best types of salad? Just about any will work. Tomatoes and cucumbers are some favorite vegetables. Tomatoes comes in all shapes and colors in the summer months. Everyone knows about red tomatoes, but yellow and orange are also quite popular. From cherry tomatoes to large beefy tomatoes, there’s quite a variety to choose from.

Peppers are also a great veggie addition to your salads. Bell peppers can add color and taste to a summer salad. Green, red, yellow, purple and orange peppers not only look pretty, but they taste great too. Don’t forget the squash and zucchini. These give your salad a little crunch and a lot of flavor.

What about fruit? Fruit is also in abundance during the summer months. Strawberries, raspberries, apples, peaches and pears along with fruits of the citrus family can be found very easily.

Try a citrus salad. Mix oranges, lemons and limes together. Add some yogurt for a little sweetness and sprinkle on the nuts. Citrus fruits not your thing? Try strawberries, bananas and grapes. Mix in marshmallows and some whipped topping. Add a cherry or two and you have a fruit salad that will satisfy even the pickiest eater.

Any number of fruits and vegetables can be tossed together to form a great summer salad. Use your imagination and concoct a different salad each day of the week. Using fresh ingredients and keeping them cool will allow you to experience the awesome taste of these salads, without sweating to death in the process.

?It is so make it easier to get by and to stick to a weight-loss program if you have the support of your friends and family.

You could be doing them a favor by getting them involved in your weight loss program particularly if living in the same household where everybody begins to eat better quality foods.

Those people who have the support of others around them when trying to lose weight have a huge advantage over anybody going it alone.

You can encourage one another to get out and exercise together and make a social occasion rather than something that you would prefer not to do.
Go walking in a park or swimming at the beach to exercise and when doing this with friends and family it can be a fun time.

If you are using resistance training as part of your weight loss program then it is good to have a training partner to help spur you on to better performances and also in the event of using heavy weights to be there for the safety as a spotting partner.

More often than not more than one person in the household will be overweight because eating habits tend to depend a lot on the foods that are purchased each week so getting everybody involved in the weight-loss program will generally see the purchase of better foods and all members of the home can have an overall change in attitude towards food for the whole household.

It can be extremely difficult for the person losing weight if there are people around them who appear to be eating all and sundry as they like with little concern for their own weight.

Many weight loss experts suggest that surrounding yourself with people who don’t have a weight problem and eat good wholesome meals all the times will actually help to encourage you to change your eating habits and fall more into line with what they regard as normal.

?Soulful Christmas Dinner Menu Ideas

Nothing says good eating like a down home Christmas dinner. Folks gather to eat just like it was Sunday dinner only more of it. If you want to add a kick to your Christmas dinner consider adding some soulful dishes to your menu.

Any southern family can tell you that dinner isn’t dinner without a little grease. For many southerners, especially in the African-American tradition, the main reason for dining together is fellowship. Families shared laughs and made important announcements and decisions over the dinner table. It is a sacred tradition in many families.

Soulful cooking came out of a need to share love with others. If you didn’t have two dimes to give to another, you could give them the gift of a home cooked meal. A satisfied belly was a happy belly. Eating our favorite comfort foods releases those “feel good” endorphins in the brain and satisfies our entire being.

Soulful cooking is just like that and at Christmastime everyone in the family who is used to soulful cooking will expect to get some for dinner. So, add a bit of soul to your pot this Christmas season when you cook.

Try a new twist on the traditional turkey dinner. Barbeque or fry the turkey for Christmas dinner. Fryers don’t cost much but it does take a fair amount of peanut oil to fill up the fryer. Be sure the turkey is good and dry on the outside before plunking him down into the hot oil.

A whole turkey is split in half and seasoned before placing it on the barbeque grill. The time for grilling will depend on the size of the turkey. A smaller turkey can be grilled while a larger one can be fried or roasted. If you plan on roasting a turkey inject with a marinade to add extra flavor to the meat. There are commercial marinades on the market or you can create your own with a variety of spices like cayenne, cumin, turmeric, diced onion, garlic, and oil.

Any greens cooked for Christmas dinner are seasoned with some sort of smoked meat. It can be bacon, ham hocks, or smoked turkey. The meat is simmered in the water first to release the flavor and then the fresh collard greens, cabbage, or green beans are added. It takes about an hour to cook fresh greens and they will reduce as time goes on.

Sweet potatoes aren’t the same if they aren’t in a casserole. Choose to top with marshmallows or not, as long as there are candied pecans somewhere in the recipe. This is a side dish but it tastes more like a dessert.

A soulful Christmas dinner brings back memories of childhood meals. Everyone can sit around the dinner table and reminisce about past meals shared together. Introduce your friends to a bit of soul this Christmas with some soulful additions to the Christmas dinner table.
