<p>When it comes to salads most of us think of that little dish that comes with lettuce, some veggies, cheese and dressing we have before our main meal. Others see that big salad bar with all the fixings. These are not the only ways to enjoy a salad anymore. Why not make your next salad the main course of your meal. </p>
<p>Salads have come a long way now that more of us are trying to eat healthy. Main course salads have become a hit and people are finding ways to make these salads a delightful treat. They’re simple to throw together and can fill up any stomach – no matter how big it might be. </p>
<p>These main course salads can be served in many different ways. Use a salad plate or a pretty, decorative salad bowl. Taco salad bowls are also a great base for your salads. You can find them in almost any grocery store and they don&#8217;t have to be filled with just taco fillings. Pita bread or taco shells can also be used to make a great main course salad base.</p>
<p>Most main course salads start with lettuce. Whether you&#8217;re fixing a vegetable salad or a meat enhanced salad, lettuce is the perfect filler. On the other hand if you&#8217;re making a pasta salad with some shrimp or tuna you can still use lettuce leave as a bed for the salad. </p>
<p>Go ahead and add those veggies to your main course salad. Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms are the perfect main course salad enhancers. The more fresh veggies you can pack in the better. You can’t go wrong when it comes to vegetables and if they taste good to you, throw them in.   </p>
<p>Lettuce and veggies aren&#8217;t enough to fill the really hungry stomachs. Chopped, sliced or diced meats such as pork, beef or chicken can be added to your salads to make them tastier and more filling as well. Turkey, ham or seafood such as shrimp can also be a great addition. Additions such as meat and eggs will give your salad some added protein and will enhance the flavor as well.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t forget those toppers. Nuts, seeds, bacon bits and croutons are always a hit when it comes to creating a salad. Your main course salad should be no exception. Add some cheese and sliced hard boiled eggs for even more substance to your salad.  </p>
<p>Main course salads can be made with Mexican or Asian fixings as well. Add some chow mien noodles and more to give the salad an Oriental flare. Don&#8217;t forget your dressing. There are a vast amount of flavorful dressings available these days to top any great salad.</p>
<p>Salads don&#8217;t have to be what was once known as rabbit food anymore. Have fun creating your main course salads and remember to let your taste buds and health consciousness lead the way.</p>

While this was done generally with the best intentions in mind it is not the way that we should look at eating. You don&#8217;t need to eat everything that is on your plate. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve had enough to eat you should stop whether there is more food available or not. You shouldn&#8217;t need to get rid of food as these days it is no longer necessary to be concerned with keeping the food fresh as it was in the past. Stop eating and put that excess food into the refrigerator where you can eat it tomorrow.</p>
<p>If you are constantly finding there is additional food left when you are satisfied then you need to reduce the quantities that you are cooking or making available for your meals each day.</p>
<p>It is better to have a little less than too much.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t feel obliged to eat all the food that is placed before you when you&#8217;re eating out. Even then you should only eat to feel comfortable and not feel full.</p>
<p>For most people it is a habit to eat everything that is on their plate and this belief has been drummed into them from childhood. Now is a good time to reverse that train of thought.</p>
<p>Where possible put the food on your plate that you intend to eat at any particular meal and then take that plate with the food to the table. This will encourage you to put limits on the amount of food that you will eat. Having additional food available at the table only encourages you to eat more. If it is not in sight you are less likely to feel the need to eat it.</p>

<p>Christmas dinner is a tradition in many countries. Families and friends get together to share a meal and have some fun. This year, if you are hosting the Christmas dinner, try a new approach to the meal. Turn it into a potluck Christmas dinner.</p>
<p>Potluck is an old term dating back a few centuries. It is a meal brought to a gathering to be shared with others. This is exactly what you will be doing with a Christmas potluck dinner. In centuries past, potluck meals used whatever was available but here, we want a bit fancier fare for our dinner menu.</p>
<p>First, the guests can come together to decide what type of menu you are looking to serve. Don’t worry if schedules are too tight for a family meeting. Use email, text messaging, and good old Ma Bell to straighten out the Christmas dinner menu. </p>
<p>Setting a menu in advance avoids everyone bringing a dessert and no side dishes for the Christmas dinner meal. A true potluck would involve everyone bringing something of their choice, but for variety’s sake, make a list first. As each household chimes in on what they will bring, add it to a list and send it out. We want to avoid duplicates if we can.</p>
<p>The main course of turkey or ham or what have you can be cooked at the host home. It proves easier to have the turkey already on site as opposed to transporting him all around town. Another family member can purchase the turkey and come over to cook it at the host home for the Christmas dinner.</p>
<p>You’ll need a place to set up the Christmas dinner choices. Most potluck meals are served buffet style so everyone gets exactly what they want to eat. Depending on the number of Christmas dinner guests, you may need a table or two set up for the menu items.</p>
<p>Place cards next to each dish explaining what it is. Most will be self explanatory but the place cards do help for kids and non-traditional meals. Label the desserts as well.</p>
<p>The dining room table can be set as usual for a potluck Christmas dinner. After the blessing, everyone can form a line to get their food.  Ask the dish maker to bring their own utensils for serving so you don’t have to use all of yours. Afterwards, everyone takes their own dish home to wash.</p>
<p>A potluck Christmas dinner saves time and money. Each dinner guest is responsible for a portion of the meal so no one has to do all of the preparation.</p>

<p>We all know that no salad is complete without the salad dressing. Many of us go to extremes when it comes to dressing and think the more the merrier. That’s perfectly fine if health or weight is not something you’re worried with. However, bear in mind that many dressings contain tons of calories so you might want to pay close attention if you are. Let’s talk about the different salad dressings to help you decide which is best for you. </p>
<p>You can walk into any salad section of a grocery store and see shelves lined with salad dressings. The brands are numerous and the flavors out number the brands. Kraft, Wishbone, Hidden Valley and even a few named after some celebrities top the list. It&#8217;s a little overwhelming sometimes trying to find just the perfect flavor. The sky is the limit, unless of course you are talking about a specific type of salad. Sometimes only one flavor will do. </p>
<p>A Caesar salad for instance, works best with a Caesar style dressing. Cobb salad is enhanced with the ever tasteful Green Goddess dressing. Often times it&#8217;s easy to find the right dressing to recreate that perfect restaurant taste just by determining which type of salad you’ll be eating. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re trying to create your own unique taste the dressing decision might be a little trickier. Often times when it comes to store bought dressings your own preferences will do the trick. Find the dressing that makes your taste buds tingle or one that you crave. You can’t go wrong when you choose a salad dressing you already know you like. </p>
<p>Salads are meant to be a healthy way of eating. When it comes to the dressings though, we forget that some are just not as healthy as others. We pour that dressing over the top of our salad until the fixings are hardly visible. All the while we’re thinking of the taste instead of the health factor.</p>
<p>It is important to read the labels on salad dressing bottles. When it comes to measuring dressing one serving usually means 2 tablespoons. Most regular dressings contain up to 11 grams of fat in 2 tablespoons. That&#8217;s not a real healthy choice for many of us.</p>
<p>How can we find healthier dressings? Look no further than the same grocery store shelf. Many companies are now adding low fat, low calorie dressings to their product lines. For many the taste is not that much different and the price is about the same, making them worth the difference for your health.<br />
You can also try making your own version of your favorite dressings at home.  Olive oil or canola oil along with flavored vinegar can be the base of a really great tasting dressing. Add some lemon or lime juice, pepper, poppy seeds or other spices to find just the right one for your salad.</p>

<p>Studies have been taken where overweight people believed they were eating no more food than other people they associated with who were considerably slimmer than them.</p>
<p>The overweight people were under the false impression that the reason why they were heavier and gaining weight was due to their body&#8217;s metabolism.</p>
<p>When keeping a record of their food consumption over a specified period of time it was shown that they were actually consuming more calories and it had nothing to do with their metabolism but rather their choice of food and the quantities they were eating.</p>
<p>You only need to reduce your calorie intake by 100 calories per day to make a substantial effect on your weight over the period of the year.</p>
<p>This is a very manageable goal for almost everybody and it is not too difficult to cut back by that amount, however many of the weight loss programs are recommending considerably more reduction in calories making it very difficult to maintain and as a result of this many people are failing to achieve what they start out to do.</p>
<p>Now when you combine the fact that you only need to reduce calories by that much, with additional supplementation of vitamins and minerals that can help your overall health, you can see how you can stay nutritionally balanced throughout the whole weight loss process and not feel as though you are starving yourself.</p>
<p>For many people just knowing that the hurdle is not so great, and that there are suitable supplements to assist them, is enough to ensure that they can start and maintain a good weight loss program.</p>

<p>It is one of the two times a year that families are guaranteed to get together for a meal. Christmas dinner with family is a big deal in most households. But, this year, plan ahead so that more time is actually spent with the family and not slaving over a hot stove.</p>
<p>Planning saves not only time but money when it comes to having a family gathering. At Christmas, most families are filled with good cheer and a longing to reconnect. Let the family Christmas dinner be the culmination of that celebration.</p>
<p>Here are a few tips to help that dinner turn out to be a delight instead of a disaster.</p>
<p>1.	Find out who is coming. We are talking about family so most people will probably attend. But, there will be the person who has to work or is out of town and can’t make it because of the weather (it does snow in a few places around Christmas!). </p>
<p>2.	Ask everyone to bring something. Obviously if they are traveling by plane that will be difficult, but for family members who are driving in or live nearby, it is okay to ask them to bring a vegetable dish or a dessert to the Christmas dinner. The others can pitch in on the preparations when they arrive. </p>
<p>3.	Make side dishes in advance of the Christmas dinner. We all like to sit and smell the delightful flavors wafting from the kitchen but that’s impractical when serving dinner to a sizable group. Before you know it, the entire house would be overheated and there would be dishes piled up in the sink for someone to wash. Fix and freeze as many side dishes as you can. A few hours before the meal, take them out and warm them up.</p>
<p>4.	Cook the turkey early. Turkey is the main course at most traditional Christmas dinners. Roasting the turkey early leaves plenty of room in the stove to fix smaller dishes together. It takes several hours for a turkey to cool completely, so by dinnertime, it will still be warm enough to serve without reheating the entire bird.</p>
<p>5.	Serve dinner buffet style. Let everyone serve themselves. Have a communal blessing over the food and then whoever is hungry can eat. It is not the sit down at the table dinner we all envision from our youth, but it is more practical. Some people like to eat early and some will be watching sports on television. </p>
<p>Planning a Christmas dinner for the family is about the fellowship as much as it is about the meal. Use the above tips to share the cooking and spend more time reminiscing with family and friends.</p>

<p>This is not true and we all develop our own fat point based on our lifestyles.<br />
While there are various different body types that are determined by our genes the percentage of fat that we carry around in our body is not due to the genes that we have inherited. It is due to the food that we have been eating from the beginning of our life to the stage where we are at presently.</p>
<p>If you have been over eating for a long period of time and you have remained at a specific fat percentage for quite some time then that becomes your new fat point. And that can change up or down according to the lifestyle that you choose to lead.</p>
<p>If you have remained at a particular fat point for a year or two then your body will develop all the necessary requirements in the form of capillaries, connective tissues, hormonal levels and so on to support that point.</p>
<p>You have determined what that point is and your body will now try to maintain the new level. </p>
<p>Your body will constantly monitor that new fat point by all the messages that are sent to the brain. If you are to go on a crash diet your body will react to the fact that it sees an attack on that fat point and will do all it can to maintain what it believes is the correct balance. The maintenance can be in the form of a reduction in muscle tissue to save fat.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for many people they don&#8217;t like to accept the fact that it is not their genes or anything else that has resulted in their fat point being too high.</p>

<p>In recent years pasta salads have taken center stage on salad bars everywhere.  People are bringing them to potluck dinners, creating them for family reunions and ordering them in their favorite restaurants. Why not create your own pasta salad for the dinner table at home? It&#8217;s easy and even better, they are delicious.</p>
<p>Pasta comes in many shapes, sizes and colors these days. From angel hair pasta to spaghetti and elbow macaroni to tiny shells, pasta has claimed its place on the grocery shelves. Pasta comes in so many different varieties it might be hard to decide which one to use. </p>
<p>Here are a few examples to help get you started, but  </p>
<p>One favorite pasta salad that has been around for years at picnics and family reunions is macaroni salad.  It can be made in many different varieties.  With a little mayonnaise, mustard, dill, sweet pickles and even hard boiled eggs you can make macaroni salad in no time.  Add onion or even cubes of cheese to give it your own personal touch.</p>
<p>Tired of those mashed potatoes or rice dishes every night?  Why not make a pasta salad in their place.  Pasta salads make great side dishes.  They go well with pork, beef, chicken and fish.  Everyone will enjoy the change.</p>
<p>When making pasta salad, remember to cool the pasta before adding any vegetables or dressings.   Fresh or frozen vegetables can be added to these great creations.  For the dressings most pasta salads are made with Italian or Ranch dressing but you can always use your favorite to see how it tastes.</p>
<p>Pasta salads are a great take along for a potluck dinner or family picnic.  These salads are simple to make but taste great.  Shrimp works well in a salad of this type.  Orzo or Tabbouleh make wonderful bases for picnic style salads.  </p>
<p>Orzo and Tabbouleh are a type of pasta that resembles rice grains.  These types of pasta can be used to create warm or cold salads that will stretch to feed a crowd.  </p>
<p>Pasta salads can be quite healthy also.  Use wheat pasta, add fresh vegetables and a low calorie or low fat dressing.  It will taste so good no one will even realize just how healthy it is.  </p>
<p>Pasta salads are easy to make and the possibilities are endless.  Start with your favorite pasta as the base line.  Add your favorite vegetables, nuts or other favorite ingredients and a dressing.  Before you know it you will have a salad that everybody wants the recipe for.  </p>
<p>Pasta salad is a dish that anyone can create. There are plenty of pasta salad recipes that we already know and love. Mix up the menu a bit and add pasta salad as a side dish or main dish every once in a while.</p>

<p>Christmas is about spending time with family and friends to share the blessings of the season. One way to do that is hosting a Christmas dinner party for your friends. Here are a few tips when it comes to planning the perfect party for the holidays.</p>
<p>A Christmas dinner party is an elegant affair. People get a chance to dress up and mingle with coworkers and other friends in an adult setting. It is as much fun as it is formal.</p>
<p>1.	Invite guests at least three weeks in advance. The Christmas engagement calendar fills up fast and you want to get your dinner party on the roster. Host a Christmas dinner party for your office department. For a dinner party that is purely personal, invite friends and their dates or spouses. Specify on the invitation that it is for adults only. This gives everyone time to find a sitter for their children.</p>
<p>2.	Plan the menu. On the invitation ask if anyone has any special dietary concerns. There could be vegetarians in the group but here we are more concerned with food allergies or conditions such as diabetes. Plan the food courses accordingly so no one feels left out.</p>
<p>3.	If everyone hasn’t responded a week out from the Christmas dinner party, contact them with a quick message just in case they forgot. For sit down formal dinners having an accurate head count is necessary to be sure there is enough food for everyone. As a standard rule of thumb, allot at least two pounds of food per person attending the dinner party.</p>
<p>4.	Decide on cooking or catering. There is nothing wrong with catering a dinner party. Cooking can be an all day affair and no one wants to be stuck in the kitchen during their own dinner party. The host or hostess wants to mingle with the rest of the guests. If you decide to cook, keep the menu simple and opt for a buffet presentation instead of table service.</p>
<p>5.	Set up the table and decorate a day in advance. This way, if anything is missing, there is time to go out and find it. Leave glasses until the last minute so they don’t gather lint and dust particles overnight. After setting the table, go ahead and clean up a bit especially in the common areas where guests will be mingling.</p>
<p>6.	Lay out the food a half hour before guests arrive. If a caterer is handling the affair there are no worries there. For a home cooked buffet style dinner party, light the liquid fuel under the food pans half an hour before guest arrive so the food will be warm.</p>
<p>An elegant dinner party is a nice way to get to know coworkers away from the office or to relax with friends you don’t see much of during the year. Everyone has a chance to show off their best holiday clothes and share a few laughs.</p>

<p>With the cost of living as high as it has become, we all need to watch our spending habits. One of the expenses that we need to watch is how much money we spend each day on food. At work, it’s fashionable to eat out with the group at least a few times a week. The trouble comes when we tally the monthly lunch bill and find we’ve spent fifty to seventy-five dollars in one month on those “fashionable” lunch outings. Imagine how that money adds up and what you could spend it on that would last longer than the meals we are eating. Taking our lunch to work more often would definitely save some of that money, right? Here are some brown bag lunch ideas for adults that will help save money and provide a delicious meal. </p>
<p>Whether you work in an office, a school, a hospital, or some other trade, lunch time can vary from day to day. Maybe everyone wants to go at noon but you can’t go until one o’clock. What do you do? The easiest thing would be to pack your own lunch.</p>
<p>Eating out every once in a while is okay, but the choices are mostly the same. When lunch comes from home, it can include whatever you want or desire to eat each day. The possibilities are endless when you think about it. </p>
<p>Adults want something more than sandwiches, chips, and a soda. With big and small lunch bags, a person has the choice to pack as little or as much as they want or need. Maybe you work twelve hour shifts. During that time you would eat two meals and a couple of snacks versus someone who only works 8 hours a day and only needs one meal and snack food. Keep things like this in mind when planning your lunch each day.</p>
<p>Lunch bag containers come in many sizes. They even make salad containers that have a compartment for the dressing. This eliminates the need to lug the entire bottle to work or pour the dressing on the salad in the morning. Adults can bring leftovers like pasta salad, fettuccine alfredo, and pork loin with crunchy vegetables and have it taste just as good as it did the first time. </p>
<p>With a brown bag lunch, we can create our favorite meals but with less fat and calories than the original. When you eat out, who knows what ingredients went into that meal. At home, you can make beef stroganoff is with fat free sour cream and lean cuts of beef along with egg noodles to have a lunch just as yummy as the one you would order at a restaurant, but healthier. Someone can feel good about eating a brown bag lunch when nothing is a mystery about the food.</p>
<p>Snacks can be fancy in an adult brown bag lunch. Instead of pudding, how about dishing up some apple cobbler? Homemade cobbler with fresh fruit tastes much better than store bought frozen alternatives. Instant pudding made with low fat or fat free milk has fewer calories than store pudding. </p>
<p>Don’t be afraid to experiment with the brown bag lunch. What you want is flavor and something exciting to eat. When you fix lunch at home, what you get is exactly what you want.</p>
