For a new strategy to become a movement, people must not only recognize what needs to be done, but they must also act on that insight in a sustained and meaningful way. The question international best-selling authors W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne ask is how can you motivate the mass of employees fast and at low cost?

Answer: Blue Ocean Strategy Tipping Point Leadership for overcoming the motivational hurdle.

In the efforts to break away from the status quo Blue Ocean Strategy does not suggest a massive top-down mobilization initiative like most business leaders often do. As Kim and Mauborgne point out change can often be cumbersome, expensive, and a time-consuming process, given the motivational needs in most large companies.

Blue Ocean Strategy recognizes in order to reach an organization tipping point and execute blue ocean strategy, employees must be informed of the need for a strategic shift and identify how it can be achieved.

Blue Ocean Strategy Tipping Point Leadership follows a reverse course seeking massive concentration. The first of three factors for motivating employees is known as zooming in on kingpins. Kingpins are the natural well-respected leaders of an organization that allocate resources. To trigger an epidemic movement of positive energy, however, you should not spread your efforts thin. Rather, you should concentrate your efforts on kingpins, the key influences in an organization. The purpose is to hit the influences of the organization head on ensuring that everyone is touched.

The second factor for motivating employees to tackle the motivational challenge is referred to as fishbowl management. At the heart of motivating the kingpins in a sustained and meaningful way is to shine a spotlight on their actions in a repeated and highly visible way. This process operates on transparency holding the kingpins accountable for their successes and failures. If particular members of the organization are responsible for inaction fishbowl management does not let them hide. This can result in an organizational culture of intense performance that not only produces strategic shift results but allows high achievers to be recognized for their work.

Blue Ocean Strategy third factor of Tipping Point Leadership for overcoming the motivational challenge is to atomization which relates to the framing of the strategic challenge. Kim and Mauborgne conclude, Unless people believe that the strategic challenge is attainable, the change is not likely to succeed. The idea is to atomize the shift to make it actionable at all levels. Demanding high performance and crossing your fingers until the following quarter numbers come out is simply not enough.

Jumping the motivational hurdle is one of four (Cognitive, Limited Resources, Motivation, and Politics) key organizational hurdles addressed in Blue Ocean Strategy. Blue Ocean Strategy identifies Tipping Point Leadership as a solution to overcome these challenges fast and at low cost. Inspiring keynote presentations for Tipping Organizational Hurdles visit The Leadership Challenge.

?Ten Most Important Items for your Emergency Kit

Emergencies can (and will) happen at any time, in any place and for many reasons. You can be prepared for the most common emergencies by investing the time, energy and money in assembling a stock of emergency supplies.

A basic emergency supply kit should be assembled and ready to use either for emergencies that find you stranded at home or for emergencies that require you to evacuate your home so everything you need should be in one container, ready to pick up and take with you if required. The best form for that container is a large tote bag but the actual kit will conform to your preference not to a standard.

There may be many things in an emergency supply kit that are more convenience or comfort items than they are necessities, and that’s completely appropriate because an emergency can take a psychological toll as well as a physical one — excess stress can make the emergency seem worse than it is. Here, however we will concentrate on the ten most essential items, or more precisely, categories of items for you emergency supply kit.

First Aid. A complete first aid kit and a good first aid guide are essential for the obvious reasons. If someone is hurt you want to be able to do the best possible job relieving the pain or danger because professional medical assistance, depending on the situation, may be days away. The essential items in a first aid kit are assorted bandages, antiseptics, over-the-counter pain relievers, instant cold packs and a thermometer. An emetic like syrup of ipecac may be a good idea in a home with children but it is very important not to use an emetic unless you have the sure knowledge of when it will help and when it might be dangerous to use. Medications. Extra prescription medications that are normally used by anyone in your household and extra glasses for those who might require them.

Water. People can go for days without food but water is essential. You should have three gallons of water stored for each person in the home to get through a 72-hour emergency. Half of the water is for consumption and he other half is for sanitary purposes and food preparation.

Food. If you purchase MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) you can easily store a three days supply of food for your whole family in a small space. Having other foods: prepared canned foods, dried fruits and beef jerky would be a nice break from MREs and having food that can be cooked or warmed on a Sterno stove would be even more satisfying but food is, of course, one of your ten essentials. Don’t forget to include a can opener if your cans are not the e-z open type. Also include fruit juices, vegetable juices, powdered milk, Ovaltine, instant coffee, tea bags or any favorite drink that stores well and does not require refrigeration..

Utensils. You’ll need paper plates, plastic utensils, an assortment of small pots for warming up food or water, some cooking utensils and some cups, plastic, Styrofoam or metal.

Clothing . Warm clothing or protective clothing, depending on the weather conditions may be essential to keep everyone healthy. Heavy shoes and boots are also, in many situations, must-have items.

Thermal blankets. Emergency Thermal Blankets are very thin, very strong, take up only a small space, are usually waterproof and are fairly inexpensive. They are good to keep warm in cold weather and to deflect heat in the summer. They can also be used as ground cloths.

Emergency lighting. If the power goes out you’ll need flashlights or lanterns or at least candles handy. They all require something else so be sure to have fresh batteries, extra fuel if you are using camping lanterns and matches. Keep your matches in a water-tight case.

Communications. A battery powered radio to get news of the emergency situation. Radios are also available that can be hand-cranked for a few minutes to give you a full hour of power.

Carryalls. You will need something to hold all your emergency supplies, something that is conducive to a “grab and go” situation such as a mandatory evacuation. Nylon tote bags (assuming everything will fit in one bag) are perfect. You can also use a large plastic watertight container with handles.

?White Out – Seven Things to Keep in Your Vehicle During Blizzard Season

Be sure to carry these basics in your vehicle when driving during the winter storm season and especially if “warnings” or “watches” have been issued by the weather bureau.

A cell phone or other emergency communication device

Thermal blankets and extra winter clothes

A basic tool kit, including a good knife, jumper cables and an ice scraper and flashlights or battery-powered lanterns with extra batteries

High calorie, non-perishable food

A metal pot to collect snow for drinking water

A can and waterproof matches to melt the snow for drinking water

A shovel and sand or cat litter for traction

Also, keep your vehicle’s gas tank full in case you get stranded — that also keeps the fuel lines from freezing.

Watches, Warnings and Whatnot

Know your weather forecaster’s language so you know what to expect. The weather bureau broadcasts watches and warnings without too much explanation of what they mean; it’s to your benefit to understand them so you know what to expect.

Basically; an “advisory” is just a ‘heads-up’ notice that tells you that conditions are right for an event; a “watch” is a little bit stronger than an advisory, it tells you that some event is likely; a “warning” means that the weather event has started near you and is highly likely to be right where you are very soon. If you live in a snow-prone area, pay close attention to weather forecasts and listen for watches and warnings like these:

Frost/Freeze Warning: Below-freezing temperatures are expected and you should take all necessary precautions.

Winter Weather Advisory: Winter weather conditions, possibly hazardous conditions for motorists, are expected.

Winter Storm Watch: This means that severe winter weather, i.e., heavy snow or ice, is possible within the next day or two.

Winter Storm Warning: This means that the severe weather has already begun and, if you aren’t experiencing it right now you will be very soon. If you’re driving and are more than a half-hour from home, it’s best to get off the road and stop at a safe place.

Blizzard Warning: Blizzards are the most dangerous winter storms. A blizzard produces high winds and heavy snow and can be expected, in different locations, anytime from December to early March. It’s not uncommon, after a blizzard, hearing about people found in their cars dead or dying of hypothermia. These are the people who were not properly prepared to be out driving in a storm or did not understand exactly what was coming. A blizzard is lots of snow and strong winds combined to produce blinding snow (near zero visibility), deep drifts, and a life-threatening wind chill.

What To Do if Your Stuck

If you can’t continue driving, pull off the road and turn on your emergency flashers. Stay inside your vehicle. It’s easy to become disoriented in the wind and snow so don’t even try walking unless you can actually see a building close by where you know you can take shelter or you know exactly where you are and exactly where you are going.

If you are staying in your vehicle and you have been stopped for a while, clear the snow away from your tail pipe before starting the engine and running your heater to warm up. Keep the windows open just a bit to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Don’t allow yourself to go into a stupor. Keep your limbs moving to keep the blood flowing to keep your brain functioning properly. Use your emergency supplies to keep warm and eat something for energy.

To make yourself visible to rescuers, turn on your dome light at night, but only while the engine is running so you don’t drain your battery. Tie a red cloth to your antenna or hang it from a closed window. After it stops snowing, you can raise your engine hood — that’s an international sign of car trouble.

Once the blizzard is over, you may want to try walking to where you are going. If you can see a road, stay on it; if you need to walk across open country, use distant points as landmarks to help maintain your sense of direction.

?Staying Safe in an Emergency Shelter

In order to increase your chance of survival during a severe storm you need to take action quickly. A storm could include the following:

tornado

hurricane

severe thunderstorm

flood

Acting quickly increases your chance of survival. The first step is to go to the nearest shelter. A safe room on your home, a basement, or public shelter would be the safest places to go.

Depending on the nature of the storm, you will have a variety of safety procedures to follow. Below are examples of safety tips to keep in mind when staying at an emergency shelter:

Be sure to prepare in advance. You most likely will not have to stay in the storm shelter for long. However, it is possible to end up there for several hours. In case of this possibility you need to be prepared. Depending on the type of shelter you stay in, you may need the following:

Plenty of warm clothes

Pillows and blankets

Sturdy shoes

A battery operated radio and extra batteries

Medication and person items

Extra clothes, socks, shoes, and sweaters

A warm coat

Adequate supply of food and water

List of emergency contacts

First aid kit that includes prescription medications

To prepare for the possibility of moving to a public shelter, do to the following:

Plan on taking the safest and shortest route to the destination. Also, you should know how long it will take you to get there.

Carpool with others in your neighborhood. This should be planned as far in advance as possible.

Lock up important legal documents, valuables and other items in a safe. You can hide this underground somewhere, or in a basement.

Inform friends, neighbors, and family members of your whereabouts.

While you are at the shelter you may have to sit in one spot for a couple of hours. This is where the pillow you brought along will come in handy. Also, in the case of a hurricane or tornado, you may need to sit a certain way to protect yourself from the possible flying debris. To protect yourself from flying objects you will need to do one of the following:

Stay low to the ground, and put the back of your hands over your head

Stay underneath a sturdy piece of furniture, such as a large table

Stay away from any windows.

Pay attention and follow the instructions of the people who manage the shelter

Listen to the radio or TV, on a station of the shelter’s choice

Do not move from your spot unless instructed to do so.

If you are staying in your own private storm shelter you should consider building a trap door on the outside of the location, in case you have to exit underground. You also may want to build a storm proof cabinet with supplies in it. Those supplies would include:

First aid materials

Non-perishable foods and water

Emergency phone numbers

A safe with important papers, family heirlooms, and money

Extra set of car keys

You may also want to put a trap door on the outside of your home basement. This will help you exit underground in case the house falls down. In addition, you may want to add a portable toilet, or a bathroom in your storm shelter.

Please follow all the above procedures carefully. If you do, you will have a greater chance of surviving a storm. Also, please also inform your friends and neighbors of the proper way to stay safe during a storm. You and your neighbors can pool together and offer rides to senior citizens and mentally challenged people. Furthermore, be sure not to forget about the physically disabled people in your neighborhood. They may need rides to shelters also.

Also, if you have a family, remember to include additional emergency supplies needed for all of them. For example, if you have an infant, you may need to put baby food, formula, and diapers on your emergency supply shelf. You may also need to include pet food and medications in this cabinet as well.

This information is not necessarily an exclusive list. Please contact your local emergency center before a storm hits. They can educate you on how to further prepare for a storm.

?Supplying Your First Aid Kit – What You Should Need in a Disaster

After a disaster, it may take some time before any rescue workers can get to you — rest assured that they are on the way but, depending on circumstances, they are unlikely to be able to reach everyone on day one or two. Your best bet, to assure your family stays safe and healthy until you can be reached by professionals, is to have disaster supplies ready. A very important element in that stock of disaster supplies is your first aid kit. If someone gets hurt during the disaster you’ll want to have adequate medical supplies on hand to treat the wound or injury and you’ll want to know how to use the medical supplies.

Pre-assembled first aid kits that contain at least most of what you need can be purchased at many places but it would be wise to assemble your own list of first aid needs before purchasing a pre-assembled kit, buying a kit that serves most of your needs and then making supplemental purchases that fit your needs.

A good first aid guide is essential! Not many people, unless they work in a medical field, will have a good enough knowledge of emergency first aid to use a first aid kit effectively without instructions. If the guide that comes with the kit leaves asking questions, replace it with a good one.

Here’s a list of what you’ll need in a complete first aid kit:

first-aid manual

sterile gauze

adhesive tape

adhesive bandages in several sizes

an elastic bandage

antiseptic wipes

antiseptic soap

antibiotic cream

hydrogen peroxide or other antiseptic solution

hydrocortisone cream

aspirin and a non-aspirin product

a cough suppressant

antihistamine

decongestant tablets

an oral medicine syringe for children

activated charcoal and syrup of ipecac (be careful with this, don’t use it unless you know how)

extra prescription medications

one tweezers

a sharp scissors

safety pins (medium sized ones)

instant cold packs

calamine lotion

alcohol wipes

a manual or electric thermometer (if electric, extra batteries should be included in your kit)

two pair (or more) of surgical, plastic gloves

a penlight and extra batteries

a mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained from your local Red Cross)

your list of emergency phone numbers

a blanket (it won’t fit in the kit but should be kept on it or under it)

Just a start? That’s a good start on the contents of your disaster first-aid kit but so much depends on you location and the kinds of hazards you may face. You might, for example, have a factory near your home that deals with toxic substances; a visit to that factory and a short talk with a safety officer will let you know exactly what you might need in case of an industrial accident — get it and put it in your kit. In an incident like that you will probably be evacuated from your home and be left to camp out. If your camp out takes you somewhere snake- or spider-bite or scorpion-sting is a real possibility, you’ll want the proper treatments in your kit; the same goes for bee or wasp stings, especially if someone in your family might have a bad reaction.

That’s a good start on the contents of the kit but consider portability. Certain types of disasters may drive you and your family out of your home or even out of your community — you’ll want to be able to grab your kit and run on very short notice. While a big plastic box is convenient for home use, it might be cumbersome in some situations. Everything will fit in a tote bag or even a back pack (except the blanket!) and they are much easier to grab and go.

Your first aid kit will, no doubt, need to be replenished regularly because it will be used for day-to-day cuts, scrapes, scratches, burns, sprains, etc. This is good because it will keep the contents fresh — but be sure to periodically check the contents of the kit for expiration dates and replace the items that are out of date.

Have a pet? Pets can get hurt in disaster situations just like people and there are first aid kits available for pets. Check with your veterinarian.

Is Currency Really That Important To You At This Point In Your Life?

Some people might feel like they have lived their lives to its fullest and now, at this point in time, why should they be so concerned about currency or making more money. Well, let me tell you all something, learning more about currency, no matter what age you are, is very, very important. It is never too late to start thinking about your finances and how they can grow. Now, with that said, to all of you younger individuals, that does not mean that you should wait until you are in your fifties or sixties to start thinking about your retirement ok, I am just saying that if nobody taught you to care anything about currency as you were growing older, it is not your fault but now that you are reading and hearing about it all of the time, do not think that it is too late, something can definitely still be accomplished.

You deserve just as much financial happiness as anyone else and because of the ever changing world that we all live in, it is even more important now than ever, to educate yourself about currency, currency trading, stock market, investments and many other important things as well. Just because you might be a little bit older right now does not mean that you should just give in to the fact that you might not have that much money, but you should understand that it is important that you do not wait another day. Start right now, thinking about your bills, savings, retirement, children and grandchildren, so that you can provide a stable financial safety net for them or teach them how they themselves can do the same. Teaching your kids about this, even if they are already grown, is absolutely wonderful and if you wait another day, you are just asking to be totally broke and you will not have any kind of savings for medical expenses or anything else, which none of us truly want right.

We all want financial freedom and most of us really do deserve it. If you find yourself being envious of other individuals that began preparing for their future at a younger age and you wish that you yourself had done the same, do not give up, do not hang your head down in shame, it is not too late! There is nothing stopping you from learning more about currency right now, except air and opportunity, just do it, as they say! Who knows what else could go on in our world in the next several years so it would be wise to go ahead and do something about your current situation today. It will not happen by tomorrow but maybe it could by next year or the year thereafter, you will not know until you just give it a good try. Tell everyone that is close to you what you have started educating yourself about, in hopes that they too will take notice.

?Senior Power – What Seniors Can Do to Protect Themselves in an Emergency

Seniors are often some of greatest victims when disaster strikes. But this should not always be the case. With a little preparation and practice, even seniors with physical limitations have the power to take charge during an emergency, and protect themselves and their loved ones. Here are six tips that all seniors can use to protect themselves in case of an emergency.

1. Learn to identify possible threats or emergencies. Many of the seniors who suffer the most during the course of an emergency are those that find themselves “out of the loop.” Make certain that you are familiar with the types of natural disasters that may strike in your area. Learn about fire safety, and what to do in case of extreme temperatures during the summer and winter months.

Seniors should be familiar with local and national media outlets that report oncoming storms or other types of natural disasters. Seniors who listen to the radio should consider purchasing a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio. These radios report the earliest warnings for oncoming bad or extreme weather. Many NOAA weather radios also come equipped with an alarm that will alert you to possible weather threats. Also, seniors should be familiar with the Emergency Alert System on commercial radio and television stations.

2. Establish an emergency contact person. This is something everybody, and especially seniors, should do to prepare for an emergency. Seniors are especially vulnerable if they live alone. Seniors who live alone should have at least two emergency contact persons. These individuals will be responsible for checking in on you if an emergency should arise. Local government officials and disaster relief workers may not be able to reach you immediately following an emergency, so make sure you establish at least two emergency contact individuals you can rely on in an emergency. If you require any special assistance, train your emergency contacts as to how to operate any specific medical equipment you may use, or procedures you may require assistance with.

Also, try to keep in touch with your neighbors. Many times in an emergency, our neighbors are our only lifelines. Be aware of any neighbors that may require special help during an emergency.

If you have a home health care provider, speak with them and establish an emergency plan of action.

3. Keep emergency supplies on hand. If you take medication, try to have enough of a supply to last you several days. Keep your supply of “emergency” medication in a ready-to-go container such as duffel bag or handbag. Prepare an emergency first aid kit and keep it in a cool dark location that is readily accessible to you in an emergency. Keep an emergency contact card in your kit with the numbers of your emergency contacts on it, as well as local police, fire, and hospital numbers. You should also make a list of all the medications you take, dosages, and allergy information and keep a copy in your ready-to-go emergency pack.

Other items you may want to keep in your ready-to-go pack include: an extra pair of glasses, copy of your insurance cards, fresh supply of hearing-aid batteries, a small emergency blanket, an emergency supply of money and credit cards, personal hygiene supplies, and, if applicable, the number of your insurance agent.

Be sure to label all your medical equipment, including canes, walkers, or wheelchairs.

4. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings. This is especially important if you have some kind of physical limitation. In case of fire, choose at least two routes for evacuating your room and building safely and as quickly as possible. If you live at home, get your family together to decide on your evacuation plan. If you live in a group home, ask about the emergency evacuation plan.

5. Guard your grandchildren’s safely. With more than 3 million children estimated to be living with grandparents, it often falls to seniors to guard not only their safety, but the safety of their grandchildren as well. Speak to your grandchildren about home hazards. Store cleaning chemicals, matches, prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs in places they are not likely to access, or install childproof locks on your low cabinets. If you live with or are visited by very young children often, install plastic covers over electrical outlets.

Learn More Tips About Currency Trading That Can Really Help You Out

There are plenty of different and very important things that you should learn about currency trading that can really help you out enormously. In this article I want to discuss with you some more general information regarding currency trading so that you can hopefully better understand what it is all about. In order for anyone to become successful with currency trading it is absolutely necessary for them to completely understand all aspects of it and what everything really means. It is not something that you can learn about in just a few minutes, it is something that is going to take you some amount of time before you will have enough knowledge concerning currency trading to do anything at all with it.

Currency trading is where an individual attempts to trade two different types of currency so that they can potentially earn some kind of halfway descent profit from doing so, however, if you are not knowledgeable enough about it then chances are you will unfortunately only lose money. Whenever you first begin your journey into currency trading one of the very first things that you should learn about would be the market trend because this is something that will play an enormous role as to how successful your trading actually turns out to be. You should also know that there are several different classifications involved within the market itself. The classifications within the market would be considered long term, short term or intermediate. Learning all that you can possibly learn about these three different classifications could really provide you with the important and accurate knowledge that is needed to successfully be involved with currency trading. The thought of the market makes most people just cringe because there are so many levels about it that are sometimes very difficult to understand. Do some more research over the internet or talk to a professional about your options, before ever entering into this sometimes dangerous and scary game. It is so important for you to learn more about the different trend lines regarding the market and currency trading because there are many things that could make a big difference if you make any mistakes.

Currency trading can be completed on the internet with an online broker and you should know that often times they will provide you with the important information that you need for no charge at all. Setting up a free demo online is really the best way to get started because playing with real money during a time when you are simply learning all of the ropes about currency trading would be a very terrifying and sometimes catastrophic decision. If you choose to go about it this route then make sure that you do atleast have DSL, or high speed internet connection, so that you do not have to worry about not being successful with your online currency trading. After becoming more familiar with all of this you should be prepared to begin online currency trading with real money, so good luck and keep gathering more and more information about it so that you will continue to grow as an investor successfully.

?Warm Up to Winter Storm Preparedness

Preparedness is the key word. Even though winter weather is, over the long term, unpredictable everyone who lives in a place where snow storms are an annual occurrence needs to prepare themselves for the ‘mother of all snowstorms.’ Here are some tips for preparing your family, preparing your car and preparing your home. But, before the tips, we start with a warning:

Avoid the complacency trap! If, one year, you invest the time and money into preparing for the worst winter storm you can imagine and then it doesn’t happen, there is a danger that you will slack off the next year. Don’t let that happen! The time when you are not prepared for something is always (or so it seems) when that particular something happens. Not preparing for a bad winter storm could be very costly.

Preparing Your Family

If you don’t already have one, put together a disaster supply kit that contains a first aid kit and first aid guide, any special medicines needed by family members, bottled water, ready-to-eat food, juices or other drinks, paper plates, plastic utensils, an assortment of small pots for warming up food or water, some cooking utensils and some cups, warm clothing or protective clothing and heavy shoes and boots, thermal blankets, flashlights or lanterns, candles, extra batteries and extra fuel if you are using camping lanterns, matches in a water-tight case, a battery powered radio and an easy-to-carry container for portability.

After a winter storm you may be stranded at home or several days. As soon as winter starts, make sure your supply of heating fuel is topped off and keep it at an adequate level. It’s very possible that power lines will be knocked down and your electricity disrupted; some homes have emergency generators for this eventuality and others have other types of non-electric space heaters. In either case, test and maintain the equipment often to make sure it won’t fail you when you need it.

Alternate heating equipment can pose a risk of fire unless used safely and maintained properly. If you use a kerosene heater as an emergency heat source, make sure there is adequate ventilation so the kerosene fumes don’t build up and always take it outside to refuel it. Keep all space heaters well away from flammable materials. Make sure you have as many fire extinguishers as required for a home your size, keep them charged up and make sure everyone knows how to use them.

Dress yourself and your children in several layers of lightweight, loose-fitting clothes instead of one layer of heavy clothing. Besides a good, water-repellant coat everyone should have warm head gear along with scarves and gloves or mittens; use the scarf over your mouths to keep the freezing air out of your lungs.

If you have a nearby neighbor or relative who is elderly or disabled, make plans to assist them through a winter emergency.

Preparing Your Car

Keep your car(s) maintained and fueled up more than half way. Unless you’re able to do it yourself, have your car(s) winterized by a professional; they will check all the systems to make sure your transportation is usable when you need it. If you have a car you don’t use often, it needs to be started and warmed-up at least every two-to-three days.

Prepare a winter emergency kit for each vehicle. Every vehicle needs a shovel, an ice scraper, a flashlight or battery lantern, extra batteries and extra bulbs, a battery powered radio, water, some simple snack food, a few thermal blankets, a tow chain or rope, something to use for traction like road salt, sand or cat gravel, jumper cables, emergency flares and a distress flag. Having a cell phone or some form of emergency communication device with you or in your vehicle at all times is a great idea. During a winter weather event or advisory only drive when you have to — being stuck on the road somewhere away from your home and family is not a good idea.

Preparing Your Home

Seal up all the places where winter winds can sneak into your home, make sure you have adequate insulation and, if you don’t have storm windows or window covers, cover the windows with plastic sheeting.

If you have any outside structures for livestock or equipment, make sure they are in good repair and properly insulated. Any trees with limbs that extend over your home or out buildings should have the branches cut away so they don’t fall and damage the roofs. If you have any leaky roofs, they should have been repaired before winter came to your town.

Insulate water pipes with newspaper and plastic to avoid them freezing up. If a pipe bursts, make sure you know where your main water valves are located.
