Dog Food: Thoughts for Consideration

If you have ever wondered about what is in the food that you feed to your
dog, it is worth finding out! Depending on the quality of food that you
purchase for your dog to eat, you could be offering him/her a high
quality diet that is full of wholesome ingredients, or you could be
feeding him/her an unbalanced, very low quality food product possibly
containing dangerous components to your dog’s overall health.

Low quality foods contain cheap additives; cheap protein sources, and
usually contain ingredients that you yourself would not think of
ingesting. If this is the case, you would not want to feed this type of
dog food to your dog. You need to find out what your dog food contains
before purchasing.

How does one determine what is low quality and what is not? This may
sound like a complicated puzzle, but it really is not. Below is a check
list to keep in mind that will help you to know the difference between
your run of the mill dog food, and a high quality product.
- Generally, low quality dog foods are sold in grocery stores, while
premium products are not.
- Premium food products will usually cost a little more than the cheap
food. This is the case because, to create a better product, better
ingredients need to be used so this raises the price for everybody.
- Premium products will contain no animal by-products but cheap products
will. This is the case, because animal byproducts provide a significantly
cheaper alternative to quality nutritional sources.
- Premium products will contain no artificial colors, or sugar, while the
cheaper alternatives will.
- When reading the label on a dog food bag, the protein component will be
listed first. For a premium dog food this list will commence with a whole
meat, such as a poultry or fish listing.

Another key fact to consider is your dog’s current health. You may be
feeding a low quality food product and are seeing a healthy dog as a
result. What you do not see however is what is on the inside. Every dog
has nutritional needs, and if they are not met, over time, that dog will
begin to suffer as a result. Whether you notice it or not is dependent on
how much attention you give to your dog.

A dog that is lacking in the appropriate calorie intake, may appear
simply lazy to you, but may actually be suffering from caloric
deficiency. A dog that appears to be overweight may be the way he/she is
due to a poor balance of fat to protein ratio. A dog that scratches
constantly may be dealing with an allergy as a result of some component
of his food.

So, it is worth your while to spend a little more to ensure a good brand
of dog food. Your dog will benefit immensely from a high quality, good
balance of ingredients in his/her dog food.

The results speak for themselves. Premium products offer a stable
platform for your dogs vitality, health and well-being.

?Kinds of Dog Training Leads

Dog training is one fun activity that dogs and their owners can share. While it may seem convenient to hire a dog trainer to do the job, training the dog yourself also has its benefits. With the advancement of technology, you can actually learn dog training by just a click of the mouse.

Another good thing is, there are quite a handful of training aids available in the market today. Among these tools are dog training leads.

Dog training leads are what most people know as leashes. While each lead may seem the same, what most people don’t know is that there are quite a few kinds of leads available. Among the more popular materials used are nylon and leather.

Nylon lead may be cheaper than a leather one, but because leather is more durable, it can actually last longer than the nylon lead. Plain or braided, leather leads are more often the wiser choice.

The lead you choose will have to depend on the size and breed of your dog. Bigger dogs require a long-wearing lead, so you must choose a leather lead. If your dog is small and of the smaller breed, a nylon lead may be sufficient.

Leads also come in different lengths, the most common ones are 2, 4 and 6 feet. While a 6-feet lead is usually used for training, a shorter length will enable you to control the dog’s movements, since it keeps the dog relatively closer. However, these shorter leads are ideal if you are merely training the dog to walk. If you are training the dog to fetch things or for tracking, then longer leads are for you.

Leads can extend for up to 12 feet, 24 feet, even 50 feet. If you are undecided on the length, you may purchase extending or retractable leads instead.

Lastly, consider your comfort as well. Choose leads that won’t cut through your skin when tugged. It must also be constructed in such a way that you are able to remove it from the collar with ease. An efficient snapping system should do the trick.

To further narrow down your choices, ask help from a professional dog trainer or any knowledgeable person.

Not all puppies may wear a lead. He must be at least 8 weeks old before he may experience wearing a lead. But before this, he must first be exposed to wearing a collar. Wearing a collar may take some time to get used to. Remember also that the collar must fit the dog’s neck perfectly to make training as fun and enjoyable as it can be.

Dog training leads are important aids in dog training. You can purchase them by visiting your local pet or dog shop, or through the internet. Websites for dog lovers often feature some leads for sale. Take note of the instructions which come with the product to ensure proper handling and maintenance of the lead.

When used properly, dogs can actually be taught to follow your commands. The key lies in choosing a good training lead, and in using it well. Training may seem difficult and may take some of your time. But time and money spent would not be a waste, since after some time your dog should be as behaved as you want him to be.

?Barbie Collectible Doll

One of the most collectibles is the Barbie doll. Through the years, not much has changed except for may be the outfits and the accessories truly making it a classic.

Barbie was invented by Ruth Handler and was introduced in a toy fair in New York City. Naturally, it was an instant success.

Just to give you an idea of what Barbie has done, she has had over 80 jobs from being a fashion model to even a president. There was even a version to promote the Olympics that was released to the market in 1975 and 2000.

There are those who say that Barbie was sometimes controversial. One example is when the company decided to make the doll join the army. She served as a medic during Operating Desert Storm in 92 that had to go through the approval of the military to make sure the uniforms were authentic. To promote the quest for space, the company even made the astronaut version with the last in 1994.

So you could say that Barbie has been through a lot for almost 50 years. So how much do collectible Barbie dolls sell for? If you happen to have one that has never been opened, there is a chance you could sell this to someone for $2,500. If you have one of the first that came out especially in 1959, you could get a check worth $10,000.

The next question once you have it is how do you take care of it? Here are some tips that you should follow to keep you collectible Barbie dolls in good condition.

First, never store this in the attic or basement. This is because although they are safe in a box, the temperatures in these places change which could ruin the doll. Also, the Barbie doll should be placed face down because if this is left on their backs, the eyes could fall off after some time.

Since most people want to show this to the world, be sure to dust them regularly. This is because if you don’t do anything about it, you may be forced to wash it and lower its resale value.

Another thing you have to do is keep your collectible Barbie dolls away from other children or pets. If left out in the open, this can be bitten or mangled. In short, destroyed and you wouldn’t want that to happen when you want make a profit later on.

Also, do not keep your collectible Barbie container. If you want to, go ahead but be very careful because the slightest moisture that enters the air tight plastic container may cause mildew or molds to grow. This can be prevented of course by putting a few small holes so moisture will be able to evaporate.

The most important tip is never expose your collectible Barbie doll to direct sunlight or any bright light as this will make the color of her skin and the outfit made.

So how do you sell your Barbie collectible doll? You can attend a convention, offer this to a specialty store or offer this to the highest bidder online. Don’t forget that you can make some money by also selling the accessories since Barbie had a lot to offer like her cars and pets. Just check on the market value of what you have and then look for potential buyers.

There are as many drinks to be made as there are Easter foods but finding an themed beverage for your Easter dinner just got easier. We’ve gathered a few of the most popular, with and without alcohol, for your choice of Easter libation.

For Young And Old Alike
These thirst quenching beverages are sure to be a hit with everyone at your Easter celebration from toddler to grandma.

Golden Easter Punch

6 cups water
4 cups sugar
1 (46 ounce) can pineapple juice
1 (12 ounce) can orange juice concentrate
1 (6 ounce) can lemonade concentrate
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 (2 liter) bottle carbonated lemon-lime beverage
1 quart pineapple sherbet

In a large saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes; remove from heat and allow to cool. Pour sugar water in a large punchbowl. Add juices and vanilla. Add soda. Stir well. Add sherbet just before serving.

Easter Egg Hatch

3 1/2 oz Frozen Vanilla Yogurt
2 oz Orange Juice
1 tbsp Sugar Syrup

In a blender, add your ingredients to about 3 ½ ounces of crushed ice. Blend on low to medium until smooth, about 15 seconds. Pour into a goblet and serve.

Egg Cream

1 – 1 1/2 oz chocolate syrup
Cold Milk
Seltzer

In a highball or 8-10 oz juice glass, pour in your syrup. Fill glass with cold milk until 2/3 full. Top with seltzer and stir.

Malted Chocolate

2 scoops of chocolate ice cream
1-cup milk
1 1/2 – 2 oz of chocolate syrup
2 tbsp of malt powder

In a blender, add all your ingredients and blend until smooth. Since no ice is used the process is quick, about 10-15 seconds. Pour into a large glass and serve.

Orange Sparkler

3 oz Orange juice
3 oz Club Soda

Fill a highball or large juice glass with ice. Add your ingredients and stir gently.

Rainbow Sherbet Punch

8 oz Orange juice
8 oz Pineapple juice
8 oz Hawaiian Punch
1 qt Rainbow Sherbet
1 liter bottle Club Soda
1 liter bottle Ginger Ale

Make a block of ice the night before by freezing water in a storage tub or bowl that is ¼ the size of your punch bowl. Remove the ice from your container and place in your punch bowl. Add your juices and Hawaiian Punch. Just prior to serving, add the Soda and Ginger Ale and drop in scoops of the rainbow sherbet.

For Adults Only

Made with wine, champagne or harder alcohol these delightful cocktails are sure to please the adults at your Easter or spring time gathering.

Bellini

1 fresh peach
Chilled Brut Champagne

In a blender, puree the peach. Pour the puree into a champagne glass and top with Chilled Brut Champagne. If peaches are out of season, frozen sliced peaches may be substituted.

Mimosa

3 oz Chilled Orange juice
3 oz Chilled Champagne

In a large chilled wineglass pour in your Orange Juice and top with the Champagne. Many like more or less juice or champagne, you can adjust the proportions accordingly.

White Wine Spritzer

Chilled White Wine
Club Soda

Mix the two together in your favorite wine glass for a light wine drink.
The Easter Bunny
1 1/2 oz. dark crème de cacao
1/2 oz. vodka
1 tsp chocolate syrup
1 tsp cherry brandy
1/2 oz. anisette or sambuca
1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
Pour brandy/grenadine into a shot glass. Float anisette or sambuca on first level. Float Southern Comfort on second level.
The Easter Egg Cocktail
1 oz blue Curacao
1 oz. white crème de cacao
Half and half
Pour the blue Curacao and crème de cacao into an old fashioned glass with ice. Float half and half on top. Choose your favorite from the list above, search for something new or make a creation all your own. One thing is certain; your guests will be impressed when you serve one or more of these drinks.

Dog Food: Understanding Ingredients

A good dog food for your dog meets with a specific, high quality
ingredient base that provides a high level of optimum nutrition for your
pet. Dog food ingredients are selected based on their quality, and are
human grade, meaning that they are also used for human consumption.
Usually a greater price tag goes along with the purchase of premium dog
food as the cost to find, evaluate and test a high quality ingredient can
be more expensive, and because of this, some dog food manufacturers
substitute quality for quantity and opt for the cheap alternative.

They do this because they know that the uneducated public will, often
times, opt to buy the cheaper alternative when given the choice. Also, it
is more convenient to purchase your dog’s food as your buying your own
groceries, so purchasing your dog’s food at the grocery store just makes
sense right?

Wrong!

For those of you that are unaware, Alpo is a pet food manufacturer that
manufactures pet food that is sold in grocery stores the world over.
Being a reputable company, one would think that Alpo would actually care
about the pets that eat the food that they produce, however for the
trained eye this just is not the case.

Alpo Lamb Meal, Rice & Barley Formula
This dog food to the trained eye is as appealing as a day old glass of
milk left out in the sun. The ingredients are of a low quality, making it
a terrible choice of food for your dog.

First of all, the protein source is cheap and of a very low quality.
Usually on a dog food label, the ingredients are listed from greatest to
least. In this case, we have corn as the first listed ingredient, with
chicken by-product, poultry by-product, animal fat, and finally lamb meal.

A good quality dog food will have the protein source listed first as this
is the highest nutritional component to any dog food; however, we see
here that “lamb meal” which is the only high quality ingredient on the
above list is fifth on the list. The fact that there are multiple animal
by-products on the list at all tells us that Alpo is using the cheapest
protein source that they can find.

The fact that these by-products are listed within the top five
ingredients, is even worse, as these ingredient positions carry a lot of
weight in the overall make up of the food.

This food is not fit for a dog to eat! The fact that Alpo makes millions
of dollars in profit yearly by creating and selling cheap products tells
me as it should tell anybody, that this company is just in the game for
the gain, and you should never stoop to their level and purchase their
food for your beloved dog!

?Why You Need to Have Dog Training Pads

Any dog lover would want to have his pet inside the house. Having to share each activity and experience inside the house with your dog makes the owner happy and a lot less lonely. Unfortunately, bringing the dog in would also mean bringing in the dog poop and urine.

That is why most dog owners make sure that their dog is potty trained at the soonest time possible. This is where dog training pads come in handy.

These pads are necessary if your floors are carpeted and hard to clean and maintain, or if you have babies and toddlers crawling just about everywhere. Just the same, even if your floors are easy to clean, you wouldn’t want to step on anything gooey, right?

A training pad is made of an absorbent material to hold dog waste and urine. The thick surface is treated with some scent which, when sensed by your pet, will make him defecate or pee on it instead of some other place.

This means that the dog’s waste shall only be confined to the pad, except if there will be leaks. The owner shall then regularly check and clean the pad to maintain an odor-free household.

To maximize the use of these pads, keep it in one particular spot of the house. This is usually placed in the kitchen or near the bathroom, for easier and faster clean ups in case of leaks and other accidents. Place it in a particular spot and lead your dog to it.

These pads often have a scent which sends signals to the dog, instructing him to pee in that location. So the next time that he feels like excreting anything, he shall only do so in the pad and not anywhere.

Lastly, do not forget to acknowledge the effort that he did. In this way, he will most likely do the same thing next time. Praise him verbally or through actions, like a pat on the head or by giving him some treats. Positive reinforcement is an effective method of training your dog.

Aside from serving as toilets for your pup, these training pads also serve as beds for some dogs. This explains why there are various designs and types of pads available. You can find round, igloo types as well as the regular rectangular ones.

Of course we want to keep our dogs warm during the cold seasons, so you might consider getting a heated pad for your pet. A temperature control enables you to adjust the degree or amount of heat as well.

Innovations in the design and technology of the training pad resulted in the creation of new and more efficient designs. Although these may cost more than the traditional pads, these new products prove to be better and more effective, making it easier for you to maintain a dog indoors.

Dog training pads are one of the lesser-known tools in dog training. While it may not be popular, it is still a very basic and helpful tool in training your dog. This aid is most useful for those who do not have a backyard or dog house for their pet, particularly apartment or flat dwellers.

As toilet or bed, these pads remain to be among the most important dog supplies, a must-have for dog lovers like you.

?Wizard of Oz Collectible Dolls

Ever enjoyed a movie and want to take something home with you as a souvenir? Well some manufacturers have done that by creating action figures like for Star Wars and Aliens. One timeless classic that also has collectible dolls is the Wizard of Oz.

One company that makes this is the Tonner Doll Company. They have all the characters there like Glinda, the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion. Each Wizard of Oz collectible doll is sold separately and is priced at $124.99.

Each character is made from hard plastic with jointing elbows, hips, knees, neck and shoulders so you can change their poses. They also have interchangeable clothes so you can put something new for them to wear.

In fact, when they first released in the market, it sold like hot cakes making it difficult for others to see or even buy them. Aside from the main characters, there are also collectible dolls with different outfits set in different locations.

There is a doll that goes out to lunch, off to a party, strolling around Emerald City and or course the basics.

You should take note though that the Wizard of Oz Collectible Dolls does not resemble any of the characters that played in the movie or even in the musical. This is just the artist’s way of portraying these characters.

Two other companies have also made their own versions of the Wizard of Oz. These are namely Madame Alexander and Barbie.

If you compare the prices of all three, Barbie is offering this at the most affordable price of less than $30 a piece. Although they are 4 inches shorter, they are still great collector’s item for anyone who loves to bring a part of the movies home.

Once you start your Wizard of Oz Collectible Doll collection, be sure you know how to take care of them so that this could still be saleable in the future. This should be stored in a climate controlled environment because changes from hot to cold or vice versa could damage the doll. An ideal place to put them would be in a chest of drawers or a trunk.

It is also best to keep them in their original packaging or air tight container so moisture does not develop. If these will be stored, this should be wrapped using acid free tissue. If there are any metals, place this somewhere else as it can discolor the plastic.

Probably the only advantage of hard plastic dolls is that you can clean the body using almost any soap detergent just as long as it does not have any ingredients that include ammonia, bleach or chlorine.

Oxygen 10 can also be used to remove stains that are not close to any painted surfaces by moistening a cotton ball. After letting it dry for a few hours, wash it with water and mild soap then rinse well.

One important thing you must remember about any doll is never get it exposed to sunlight. This will make the fabric fade which will also decrease the value of your collectible.

The Wizard of Oz Collectible Doll is must have for those who have been touched by the movie or the play. It has a different message for each of us and one line that perhaps everyone will remember is that “there is no place like home.”

Trenching And Plowing Equipment

When trenchers were first introduced to the residential
and commercial contractors, they rapidly became the
backbone of the crew. The time and labor trenchers
saved when they replaced the pick and shovel was
simply incredible. The contractor was able to double
the number of jobs his crew could complete in the
same amount of time – or less.

The standard types of trenchers, whether dedicated
units or attachments, they are versatile machines
for contractors to have with them on the job. They
can be used for many different purposes, from digging
valve box holes to trenches for drain pipes. In
areas that contain rocky soil, large roots, or
other problems where the other machinery can’t access
the soil, the trencher will minimize downtime that
was once spent digging by hand.

The many types of vibratory plows will offer even
more labor saving options. These plows eliminate
the hand labor of having to lay the pipe and
backfilling on numerous jobs. Even though vibratory
plows have taken their market share and are great
for pulling pipe, trenchers are still very important
for many different types of applications.

The impressive company Bobcat offers three different
trenching attachments that are designed for use on
the smaller skid steer loaders. The attachment
models LT102, LT203, and LT304 all have digging
depths from 2 – 4 feet.

Mini trenchers
The mini trenchers have been re-designed and
finely tuned from the same concept that made standard
trenchers so popular. As the name suggests, they
are lightweight, with the largest models weighing
less than 400 pounds. They are also compact,
allowing you to put them in the back of an average
pickup truck.

They will also dig a trench around 4 inches wide,
and up to 13 inches deep, neatly laying the soil
on side of the trench. Without any trouble at
all, you can cover pipe with the backfill, leaving
a barely visible seam in the soil.

With time being money, these types of mini trenchers
are the answer when working in tight or small areas,
or on jobs that have a lot of trees or shrubbery.
Mini trenchers have a turning radius of less than
two feet and they will easily fit through most
garden gates. Jobs that would normally need a lot
of manual labor will now save you a lot of time
and man power.

If you do construction or excavation work, even
gardening, you’ll find trenching and plowing
equipment to be essential to your work. If you’ve
never used these types of equipment before,
you’ll be amazed at just how much time you can
save.

If you are just starting up your business, you’ll
find this type of equipment to be just what you
need. You won’t need a lot of labor with a trencher,
as you can do most of it yourself. For saving
time, money, and effort, trenching and plowing
equipment is the way to go.

PPPPP

?Traditional Easter Foods and Their Origins

Nothing says Easter like a fabulous Easter dinner with friends and family. What do you serve for Easter dinner with your family? Every year there are a few traditional Easter dishes that make their way onto dinner tables across America and many of them have interesting symbolism behind them that you may not even be aware of.

Hot Cross Buns
These currant or raisin filled yeast bun is a traditional favorite in England. Usually eaten on Good Friday they also have a “cross” on top of the bun. Mostly thought of as a Christian symbol it the hot cross bun finds its roots in pagan tradition. There is some disagreement with the symbolism of the cross from the pagan custom. Some thoughts are that the cross represents the sun wheel while others believe the cross might symbolized the four quarters of the moon.
When the Christian Church attempted to ban the buns the people balked so the church did the next best thing and “Christianized” the bread. Queen Elizabeth I passed a law that only allowed the bun to be eaten during Christmas, Easter or funerals.
Pretzels
Originally created by monks with leftover scraps of dough and given to students as rewards, pretzels became a popular part of Lent celebration during the Middle Ages. Pretzels do not contain eggs, milk, butter or lard, ingredients which are avoided during lent. Pretzels are said to represent praying arms and the three holes represent the trinity. In some countries, pretzels used to hidden together with eggs at Easter as well.

Greek Easter Bread
Greek Easter bread, or tsoureki, is a sweet dessert bread traditionally served as part of the Greek Orthodox Easter feast. Tsoureki was also traditionally given as an Easter gift from children to their godparents. Different versions many include a citrus flavor, topped with nuts. A red egg is traditionally cooked with the bread as well.

This Easter treat is traditional shaped into a braid with a red egg tucked into the braids of dough. The bread is said to represent the light given to us by Christ’s resurrection and the red egg represents Christ’s blood. Another version of Greek Easter bread is cooked as a circle with red eggs forming a cross across the top of the bread.

Ham
Ham is a traditional part of the Easter feast in many American homes, and it’s origin is more practical rather then symbolic. In early years, before refrigeration, fresh pork slaughtered in the fall that hadn’t been consumed before Lent had to be cured for preservation. Curing was a slow process and the first hams were generally ready around Easter time, making it a common choice for Easter feasting. Today, many American families still serve ham as part of their Easter celebrations.

Lamb
Another meat commonly served at Easter time is Lamb. This tradition is actually a combination of two symbolisms. The original use of lamb dates back before Easter as part of the Jewish Passover where a sacrificial lamb is roasted and eaten as a reminder of the angel of God passing over their homes in Egypt.

Later, Jesus was often referred to by Christians as The Lamb of God. As Christianity grew, Hebrews converting to Christianity brought their traditions with and the combination resulted in the use of lamb as part of many Easter dinners.

As you plan your Easter meal think about incorporating some of these traditional foods. When you gather around your table this Easter season you’ll be able to share good food and interesting information. Your guests will be impressed by your cooking skills and your smarts.

?Dog Training Schools: How to Choose

The truth is there are so many dog training schools that offer their services to anyone willing to pay them. The problem though is not all schools will meet your standards or your expected guarantees. Here are some points of considerations when trying to choose a good school for training your dog.

Reputation

Reputation has different meanings to different people- for some it is the capacity to yield good results regardless of the means, for others it is the popularity of the school itself which makes it highly recommended. But reputation, in general, is a good gauge as to how popular the name of the training school and the appeal of the training methods it uses. It also reflects how many people have trusted on them.

To find a school with excellent reputation you could ask around or search through websites. Veterinarians usually have several names of schools and trainers to give you, your dog breeder could also provide you with some references and ASPCA or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals can provide a list of registered names that are sure to use humane methods approved by the organization.

Methods of Training

Any self-respecting training school uses responsible dog training methods. The school must have equal concern to your dog as you do, treating your dog one of their own. Beware of schools that employ trainers who still use old training methods such as yelling or hurting the dogs for there exists many of this kind.

A good school should use humane techniques that promote positive training and limits the use of risky negative reinforcement techniques. The former covers praises and the use of dog treats in recognition of the desirable behavior while the negative reinforcement techniques include practices like alpha rolling, choking and yelling.

Sufficient knowledge

The knowledge on training of the schools must range from the oldest unreliable method to the latest training techniques for dogs. Having extensive orientation in this field would optimize the capacity of your dog to learn since it would be exposed to all possible trainings to which it could respond well.

In researching for training schools, secure information regarding the latest seminars that the trainers attended to and the up-to-date facilities they have. Remember that you would pay hefty amounts to get your dog trained, it is but proper that you and your dog receive proper compensation for your investment.

Another thing that you should keep in mind is that the school’s exposure to widespread training. There are schools that claim of specialization while others advertise that they have sufficient knowledge on all fields of dog training. Your choice should depend largely on the scope of knowledge the training school has.

Classroom Set Up

There are two types of classroom set-ups- group classes and private lessons. The main advantage of the group class is that it promotes socialization and good behavior in the presence of other dogs. Also, when the owner trains alongside his dog, the owner could benefit from exposure to other handlers’ mistakes and techniques.

On the other hand, private trainings could not yield these advantages. There is also a good chance that the transfer of learning and obedience to command given by persons other than the trainer is poor.

It is easy to pick any dog training school but choosing the right one for your dog could prove to be a tedious process.
