You know I have said that to many many Tool fans who have said “Maynard wouldn’t write about fisting” In a real angry way. Like they think Maynard is a God and can only write songs that have divine meaning, which upsets me because a lot of Tool songs speak about not givning all your thoughts to one way of thinking without questioning them. It makes me think a lot of people miss the point, or I do.
Being said, interpret it as you wish, and savor it. But to say “It’s about this and that” is a bit ignorant unless you co-wrote the song with Adam and Maynard. “To ME the song relates to my experience with being bored with sex and covering myself with peanut butter and strangling hookers to get at least some satisfaction out of sex” would be more of an understanding of the song. Tool is raw emotion and feeling, put to words and music.
Most people are “thinking for themselves”, while spewing off something that they heard someone else say or write. It’s about slowing down and truly observing yourself, others, and your surroundings. Everyone has different life experience and I think the attraction of TooL is that they’re songs describe a non detailed experience that is relatable to anyone who has truly had a meaningful moment in life, free to interpret as you wish, and relate to the song.
