Why People Go Out of Retirement

Money is a very important part of the American lifestyle. That is no different for retirees. Even though you have retired from the workforce, you will still need money to function on a daily basis. Many people that have gone into retirement go back out of retirement, at least part time. This is often for financial needs, but there are other factors involved in some cases as well. We will look at a few of the reasons for going out of retirement.

Finances: Many of us have saved all our lives for our retirement. We have a number of IRA accounts, a 401(k) and several CDs that are coming to maturity. The problem is this; we have more expenses as we age because of health problems and other issues. The possibility of having a little extra income from a part time job sounds nice to many retirees. Not only will they have more money to spend now, if they contribute to the company’s retirement fund, they will have more later in life when they may be unable to work even part time.

Love of Work: Yes, I said it, some people love to work. There are many people in the world whose work is their life. Artists, chefs, counselors, etc, all tend to let their profession bleed into their social life, therefore going back to work is just a structured version of their retirement. Oh, and they get paid. Many business owners who decided to retire and turn the business over to someone else tend to keep an office in their place because of they love they have not only for work, but for the business. Someone who built a business from the ground up and made it successful is likely to stick around and want to see where it goes after they are out of the picture.

Friends: Many of us meet our new friends at work. These are people that we have spent 40 hours per week with for the last 20-40 years. Like it or not, they are your friends, and leaving them is not always easy. Although a senior returning from retirement may not go back to the same job, they want to meet new people and have that social interaction that they have been used to on a daily basis.

Apprehension: This is probably a more common reason than one might think. Many seniors don’t want to admit it, but they are apprehensive about sitting at home all day and watching game shows and playing Bingo. They don’t know what tomorrow might bring in retirement and they have heard all too often that how so many people give up not long after retirement.

Likely, once your parents retired, they really retired. They may have spent time doing some volunteer work or sewing or woodworking, but they would never consider going back to work. In today’s society, that could be no further from the truth. More and more people are looking for retirement jobs for one of the reasons we listed. The first place to start looking for a retirement job is your previous employer. They may have something in the same department that you left, or they may have a part time consultant position that will keep your mind fresh and agile into your retirement years. If there is nothing available with your previous employer, look at a business that entails something that always interested you. A place where you can get paid to do a hobby is sure to keep your attention and be a great asset as a retirement position.
